Facebook to Penalize Unoriginal Posts: Meta's 2025 Content Strategy Explained

2025 Meta Update Aims to Promote Original Content, Endorse Genuine Creators and Improve Content Quality: Do You Know What Counts as Original?
Published on

Meta has announced a new set of policies meant to address the increasing prevalence of unoriginal content on Facebook. The decision comes in response to complaints from users that they repeatedly see the same viral posts recycled by many accounts. This Meta update hopes to support original work and recognize genuine creators. It also aims to limit the reach of those simply reusing posts without permission or attribution.

Facebook Crackdown: What Is Unoriginal Content?

According to Facebook’s new rules, ‘unoriginal content’ includes video, photo, or text posts reused or repurposed from another creator without credit. While users can still reshare a post, they can only do so if they also include meaningful commentary, a reaction, or a creative edit.

Simply stitching clips together or adding a watermark will not count. Resharing other content without meaningful or original change is also not going to be permitted.

How Meta Plans to Enforce the Rules

Meta update will reduce the visibility of duplicate content and cut monetisation access for repeat offenders. Users who frequently post copied material will see a decline in their content’s reach, making it harder for them to grow their audience.

Facebook is also testing a feature that will display a link to the original version of reposted content. Thus, offering greater transparency and recognition to the original creators.

Best Practices for Facebook Creators

To assist content creators, this Meta Facebook update recommends the focus should be on original content or at least adding commentary or voiceover to repurposed content.  In addition, the platform prefers long videos with value instead of super short videos.

Creators should use well-formed captions, only 5 hashtags. They are advised to avoid the use of all capital letters and irrelevant links.

The Future of Social Media

Original content is becoming more scarce and thus more expensive. Platforms, such as Facebook, are moving toward value in authentic voices while discouraging low-value engagement efforts.  In the next few years, we may see creators who prioritize originality and storytelling. Transparency will dominate digital space as copycat content fades away forever.
