The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has brought essential PF account services to WhatsApp for easier member access. Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the facility on November 1, 2026, in New Delhi.

The announcement came during EPFO's 74th Foundation Day celebrations, targeting simpler account access without routine office visits. Members can now check their PF balance, access passbook information, and review five recent transactions.

The new EPFO WhatsApp service also offers personalized assistance for requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY). The initiative extends digital access beyond routine account checks to employment-linked benefit support.

According to the Labour Ministry, the service aims to reduce dependence on regional offices. It also provides another option for members facing difficulties with existing digital platforms.

Members can access the facility by messaging EPFO's verified WhatsApp number, +91 8796441800. The organization has also shared a QR code for starting the conversation.

After sending a 'Hi' message, subscribers can select their preferred language and follow the available instructions. The process includes identity verification before displaying individual provident fund information.

The WhatsApp menu covers PF balance enquiries, EPF passbook access and recent transaction records. Members can also seek help with pending PMVBRY requirements, including Aadhaar authentication and documentation-related issues. However, subscribers should use only EPFO's verified contact and avoid sharing sensitive banking credentials.

The ministry described the launch as a step towards accessible digital services, stating, "This will make routine services accessible through a familiar mobile platform and reduce the need to visit EPFO offices." The move reflects EPFO's broader push towards technology-enabled member services.

The launch also introduced automatic settlement for eligible inoperative EPF accounts holding balances up to Rs. 1,000. Aadhaar-verified account holders will not need to submit individual claims under this facility.

EPFO will complete identity and bank verification before transferring eligible amounts to beneficiaries. The initiative could cover approximately one lakh accounts involving nearly Rs. 5 crore.

However, the WhatsApp rollout has faced early technical complaints from some subscribers. Members reported difficulties accessing account information shortly after the service launch. These initial issues highlight the importance of reliable digital access as EPFO expands its services.

EPFO serves more than eight crore active subscribers and manages substantial retirement savings. The WhatsApp integration could simplify routine account checks for millions of salaried workers. Its long-term usefulness will depend on consistent service availability and smooth verification.
