Elon Musk’s one-word reply, ‘hmm,’ has sparked fresh debate over a proposed US bill that could slow the growth of AI data centers in the country. Musk reacted on X after Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan criticized the legislation, saying it could hurt America’s lead in artificial intelligence.
In his post, Tan wrote, “Sanders and AOC introduced a bill to pause ALL AI data center construction. 300+ local bills filed. Half of planned 2026 data centers facing delays or cancellation. Each one brings billions to local economies.”
The bill, introduced by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, proposes that the US government should pause new AI data center projects until broader AI oversight rules are introduced. The proposal focuses on power and water use, worker rights, and the broader impact of rapid AI growth.
AI companies depend on large data centers to train and run their systems. Firms like OpenAI, Google, and Musk’s xAI need massive computing power. Without new centers, companies may struggle to expand their AI tools at the current speed.
