RadianX, a California-based startup, is developing a new type of solar technology that can collect energy from indoor and outdoor light, potentially allowing devices such as e-readers and sensors to operate without regular charging or battery replacements.

The technology uses perovskites, a family of materials that can convert light into electricity. According to RadianX, its material performs comparably to conventional solar panels outdoors while collecting indoor light twice as effectively. This could make solar power practical for electronics that spend most of their time inside buildings.

The company called this approach "edge energy." Its potential applications include smart sensors, wearables, connected devices, and factory equipment. These products depend on batteries that need periodic charging or replacement, creating maintenance costs and operational challenges.

Perovskite Technology Targets Indoor Power

Traditional silicon solar panels work best under direct sunlight. Their performance can drop significantly indoors, where light levels are much lower. RadianX is attempting to address this limitation through perovskite-based materials designed to capture more energy from available light.

The startup said that one of its panels, measuring 1.2 by 0.6 meters, has achieved 22.33% efficiency. Its panels can also be manufactured as thin as 0.7 millimeters and adapted to different device sizes.

However, perovskites still face challenges. They are generally more expensive than conventional silicon panels and have historically raised concerns about long-term durability.

RadianX Raises USD 9 Million for Production

RadianX has secured USD 5 million in seed funding led by SOSV and Twynam to support commercial-scale manufacturing. Pacific Union Technology Precision Manufacturing is contributing another USD 4 million toward a dedicated production line. The startup plans to supply integrated power solutions to device manufacturers. Its founders see opportunities across e-readers, industrial sensors, and wearable electronics.
