OpenAI has announced that it will make ChatGPT Go available to users in India at no cost for one year, starting November 4. The special promotional offer is available for both new and current ChatGPT Go subscribers. The announcement came as the company deepens its presence in India, one of its biggest international markets.
The least expensive paid plan from OpenAI is the ChatGPT Go plan, launched in India in August 2025 at a price of less than $5 a month. It gives users a 10-fold increase in usage capacity over the free version, along with features such as image generation, file uploads, and customized responses via augmented memory.
India is central to OpenAI’s global expansion strategy. With over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, the country represents a massive user base for digital services. OpenAI established its New Delhi office in August and is actively building a local team to accelerate adoption and partnerships.
While India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market after the US, converting users into paying customers has proven difficult. According to Appfigures data reviewed by TechCrunch, ChatGPT generated $3.6 million in in-app purchases from over 29 million downloads between May and August 2025.
OpenAI’s move comes amid growing competition in India’s AI market. Perplexity recently partnered with Airtel to offer free Pro subscriptions to its 360 million users, while Google rolled out a free AI Pro plan for students. These initiatives underline how global AI companies are vying for dominance in India’s fast-growing digital ecosystem.
OpenAI will host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where the company is expected to unveil India-specific tools and enterprise partnerships. “We’ve been inspired by the creativity of our Indian users,” said Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Go offer is a strategic move to build user loyalty and capture a broader audience in India’s booming AI sector. By prioritizing accessibility, the company aims to cement its presence ahead of rivals in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital economies.
