Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has collaborated with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, to bring his ambitious vision of AI music to life in a project called Secret Mountain.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in integrating AI with the creative realms of storytelling and music.
Rahman traveled to OpenAI's headquarters, where he collaborated with Altman to explore how AI tools can transform the creation of music and enhance digital storytelling, creating a unique experience.
Secret Mountain is a music metaverse concept proposed by Rahman this year. It is set in a virtual world where people from diverse cultures reside, each bringing a unique contribution to the soul through music.
One of its key characters, Luna, wanders this universe, showing the strength of cooperation and convergence in music. The project envisions a ‘virtual global ban’ on AI-created parts, but allows for human emotion and artistry to be reciprocated.
Rahman posted on social media about how thrilled he was to meet Sam Altman, sharing a selfie along with the note that they had discussed how AI can elevate Indian talent and address generational issues.
He reiterated that Secret Mountain is dedicated to empowering minds worldwide, particularly in India, to responsibly and creatively utilize AI tools.
The maestro of music has been outspoken on the use of AI in creative activities. In Rahman's opinion, AI cannot replace human artists, but it can serve as a creative partner. He described AI as a tool that can help artists explore new concepts and ideas. However, he believes the emotional richness and human touch in music cannot be replaced.
Rahman explores AI creativity while working on the cinematic adaptation of Ramayana with legendary composer Hans Zimmer. This simultaneous engagement demonstrates his versatility, as he embraces both eternal orchestration and futuristic exploration.
