Apple’s cautious artificial intelligence strategy could pay off in 2026. While rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Meta spend hundreds of billions of dollars on data centres, chips, and large language models, Apple has chosen restraint. This strategy has drawn widespread criticism, with analysts arguing that the company has fallen behind in AI innovation.

Siri Delays Raise Questions

Concerns have further increased after successive delays to major Siri upgrades. Apple’s voice assistant still fails to keep pace with the conversational depths of new AI tools. At the same time, competitors are rushing ahead with aggressive investments and rapid rollouts.

Cash Cushion Offers Flexibility

Apple’s restraint has given the tech giant a strategic buffer. With cash and marketable securities totaling more than $130 billion, the company now has substantial financial latitude. Additionally, if investors lean toward massive AI spending to achieve rapid returns, Apple is positioned to acquire or partner with companies in the event of a collapse in AI startup valuations.

Siri Redesign at Centre

A redesigned Siri is a key part of Apple’s comeback plan. According to reports, the iPhone manufacturer may release its upgraded assistant as early as spring 2026. The new Siri will have improved tonality and handle complex queries easily. Apple has reportedly tapped Google's Gemini models to improve performance, but the company has not yet confirmed this.

Power of Apple Ecosystem

Apple is not pursuing cutting-edge singular AI models; rather, it is relying on its ecosystem. The large number of active iPhones supports the company’s ability to introduce AI functionalities via software updates. With strong interconnectivity among devices, Apple has an advantage that most AI startups lack.

Leadership Changes Signal Reset

The tech giant has also reshuffled its AI leadership. Apple’s AI Chief John Giannandrea retired earlier this month. The Siri project is now under Mike Rockwell, who led the Vision Pro project. It will be interesting to see how the new management will drive Apple’s ambitious projects toward success.

The company is also reorganizing its teams into product-focused units to target better execution. For Apple, this patience could finally translate into progress in 2026.
