Apple is reportedly entering the smart glasses market as the sector grows rapidly. However, reports indicate the smart glasses will look like normal eyewear rather than an AR device. Reports say the company is working on glasses that could connect with the iPhone and use AI to understand what is around the wearer. The glasses could compete with Meta’s smart glasses and may arrive in 2027. At this point, all are rumors, as Apple never confirmed anything.
The move comes as smart glasses are getting more attention. According to a latest survey report, worldwide shipments of AI glasses saw a 263% year-over-year increase in the first-half of 2026. Interestingly, 96% of the shipments are related to display-less smart glasses.
Reportedly, the displayless smart glasses that Apple is about to launch are under development with the code name N50, with production expected to begin in December this year. So, users can expect the glasses to be launched in 2027.
Reports also suggest that Apple is testing glasses without a built-in display. Cameras and Siri could handle much of the experience. A full AR product may come later, with reports pointing to 2028 or 2029.
Skipping a display could help Apple keep the glasses lighter and easier to wear. The device could handle calls, music, and Siri requests while the iPhone handles other tasks.
The cameras are likely to raise questions. People near the wearer may not always know when the glasses are recording. Privacy concerns have already become a major issue around Meta AI glasses.
