Apple has introduced a useful multitasking improvement with the iPadOS 27.2 update, making it easier for users to run two applications side by side. The new feature simplifies Split View setup and addresses a usability issue that has affected the iPad multitasking experience.

iPadOS 27.2, released last week, brings several changes to Apple's tablet operating system. Among them is a small but practical improvement that reduces the steps required to arrange two applications on the screen.

iPadOS 27.2 Simplifies Setting Up Split View

The latest update makes it easier to select a second application when users tile an existing app to the left or right of the display.

According to Apple's official release notes, "Side-by-side multitasking is easier to set up with the option to choose a second app whenever you tile apps to the left or right with the window controls or menu bar."

Setting up two applications side by side was cumbersome. Users had to open the first application, resize its window, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access other applications, and select the second app. In several cases, they also had to manually resize the second application.

The process is considerably simpler with iPadOS 27.2. Whenever users employ Apple's window controls to position an application on either side of the display, the Home Screen appears immediately. They can then select another application and place it alongside the first with a single tap.

Apple Brings iPhone Duo-Inspired Multitasking

The change appears to draw inspiration from iPhone Duo, whose Split View system was praised in several reviews for offering a more intuitive multitasking experience.

Apple has not brought the entire iPhone Duo system to the iPad. However, the latest adjustment makes setting up side-by-side applications more straightforward.

Users can also speed up the process by learning the built-in keyboard shortcuts for app tiling. This improvement is particularly useful for people who regularly switch between applications, letting them organize their screens in fewer steps. While it is a relatively small addition, it makes everyday multitasking on the iPad more convenient.
