The long-awaited Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is preparing for takeoff on Xbox Series X|S, with the latest entry in Bandai Namco’s flight-combat series set to launch on October 2, 2026. The game brings a new campaign, expanded aircraft customization, and a stronger focus on the pilots and squadron members surrounding the player.
The title is the first mainline Ace Combat game in seven years and was developed by Bandai Namco Aces. It will also launch on PlayStation 5 and PC.
One of the biggest changes is the way the story is presented. Instead of relying mainly on traditional briefings and cutscenes, Ace Combat 8 uses a first-person perspective for several story sequences.
Players take on the identity of the Wings of Theve, a legendary ace whose reputation was created to maintain morale during a conflict. The campaign follows the pilot and members of Joker Flight as they operate from the aircraft carrier Endurance.
The squadron plays a much larger role, with relationships and interactions between missions becoming part of the campaign.
The game expands the aircraft roster and gives players more flexibility in how they approach each mission. Players can unlock and upgrade aircraft and equipment using credits earned during the campaign.
Ace Combat 8 also introduces new environments and enhanced cloud technology, while large-scale battles are designed to make better use of the newer hardware. The game retains the series’ arcade-style flying while offering different levels of control for players who want a more demanding flight experience.

Multiplayer is another major addition. According to Bandai Namco, the online component includes new modes, progression systems, and an Air Base virtual lobby that can host up to 100 players. Cross-play will allow players on supported platforms to compete and cooperate across systems.
For Xbox players, the Deluxe Edition includes three days of early access, allowing owners to play before the standard October 2 release. Pre-order customers also receive Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War and a playable F-14A aircraft.
