PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass will remain among the most prominent services for console and PC gamers in 2026. However, the two companies have different plans, prices, and game releases.
Sony provides three different PlayStation Plus plans: Essential, Extra, and Premium, while Microsoft presents four of its plans: Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. Moreover, the two services differ in how they handle cloud gaming and new game releases.
In the USA, PlayStation Plus Essential costs USD 79.99 per year, PlayStation Plus Extra costs USD 134.99 per year, and PlayStation Plus Premium costs USD 159.99 per year. Monthly plans cost USD 10.99, USD 16.99, and USD 19.99, respectively.
Essential plan includes access to the monthly games, online multiplayer features, discounts, exclusive content, cloud storage, and Share Play. According to Sony, starting in January 2026, PS4 games will occasionally be part of the monthly games selection.
Extra adds access to the Game Catalog, which features hundreds of games, along with Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium includes everything in Extra, as well as the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog.
Sony's September 2026 Game Catalog lineup includes RuneScape: Dragonwilds, WWE 2K26, Ball x Pit and Date Everything! Premium members also get access to titles including Mega Man X Command Mission and Metro Redux.
Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass structure has changed, with Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass now available in the US.
Game Pass Essential costs USD 9.99 per month and includes more than 50 games, cloud playtime, online console multiplayer, and in-game benefits. Premium costs USD 14.99 per month and provides access to more than 200 games, cloud gaming, and new Xbox-published games within one year of launch.
Game Pass Ultimate costs USD 22.99 per month and provides access to 500+ games across Xbox consoles, PC and supported devices. It also includes new games on day one, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, cloud gaming and online console multiplayer.
PC Game Pass costs USD 13.99 per month and includes more than 300 PC games, day-one releases and EA Play.

One of the biggest differences between the two services is how they approach new games.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass include select new releases on day one. Microsoft currently excludes Call of Duty titles from that day-one policy, with future Call of Duty releases planned to join Game Pass during the following holiday season, about a year after launch.
Game Pass has also added major third-party games during the year. Microsoft announced Cyberpunk 2077 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II among its 2026 Game Pass additions.
PlayStation Plus follows a different model. Sony provides monthly games across all three tiers, while Extra and Premium subscribers get access to the Game Catalog. Premium additionally offers classic games and trials. Sony updates its catalog regularly, although availability varies over time and by tier.
Another key difference is cloud gaming. PlayStation Plus Premium will include a PS5 cloud streaming service, while Xbox Game Pass will offer cloud gaming on supported devices such as mobile, tablet, TV, and VR headsets.
Microsoft will also adjust its cloud gaming rules starting in November 2026. The Ultimate package will include 15 hours, Premium 10 hours, and Essential 5 hours. Once these hours expire, users can buy more cloud gaming hours. The company estimates that around 4% of Game Pass users will be affected.
The two plans revolve around two separate ecosystems. PlayStation Plus is structured to serve PlayStation users, starting with monthly games, online play, game libraries, classics, trials, and streaming. Xbox Game Pass covers Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, and cloud-enabled devices. The high-tier offerings focus more on day-one games, third-party service access, and cloud gaming.
For PS5 gamers, the PlayStation Plus subscription gives them access to Sony's subscription ecosystem. Xbox and PC gamers have different versions of Game Pass, depending on what they prioritize. Both services keep changing their offerings, so the current game selection matters in 2026.
