Nightreign’s co-op skips duos due to FromSoftware’s focus on balancing solo and three-player gameplay.
Combat and revive mechanics were designed for three-player synergy, making duos challenging to implement.
Fan feedback may lead to future updates, potentially adding two-player co-op to Nightreign.
Elden Ring Nightreign came out on May 30, 2025, and fans are loving its roguelite spin on the Elden Ring thing, set in Limveld. Unlike the first game, which lets players play with whoever, Nightreign only lets them play solo or with three people, no duos.
People are wondering why. This article will tell you why there's no two-player mode, straight from the people who made the game, and how it changes gameplay.

Nightreign is quick and roguelike. You're a Nightfarer taking on random stuff in three-day chunks. You can go it alone or team up with three, either with randoms or friends using passwords. Nightfarers have their own special moves, and the game gets harder based on how many are in your group. But the missing two-player thing is weird, especially since past FromSoftware games like Elden Ring let you team up with one friend.
Game director Junya Ishizaki said the reason they skipped two-player was balance. Nightreign's fighting, how you revive people, and the random events were all made for solo or three-player mode to keep the game challenging. The team wanted to get three-player mode right without making it too hard. Adding two-player would've meant changing how enemies scaled and other stuff, which they didn't do because they ran out of time and wanted to focus on the main game.
The way the game is set up makes it tricky. The revive thing, where you slash a downed teammate to bring them back, works well with three since one can keep enemies busy while the other revives. With two, you're both open to getting killed. If they made enemies easier for two players, it could be too simple. If they made it too hard, it would suck. The three-player thing fits Nightreign’s short, 45-minute runs and meteor strikes, so teamwork is key.
People are torn about no duos. All over social media, you see people sad because they like playing with one friend. They're annoyed with having to rely on random people who mess up the team because there's no voice or text chat in Nightreign. But some like the three-player thing, saying it makes you work together. They're still hoping for a duo mode in the future.

Ishizaki said they heard the fans and might add duos down the road. Early tests showed connection problems, so they worked on the multiplayer stuff. There's no promise of a duo mode, but they might add it in later. Fans might even make their own mods like they did for Elden Ring.
Right now, if you want to play with one friend, use the password thing and get a random third player. It sucks because the team isn't always great since you can't talk. You can use Discord for voice chat, but it's not the same as a real duo mode. Playing solo is hard because you can't be revived, which shows the game is made for three.
The three-player thing changes how you play, making you think about who you team up with. Each character’s moves work with the others, making for good fights. Duos would mess this up. You have to get good at trio tactics or tough it out solo, which means good timing and using your items right to survive.
Nightreign doesn't have two-player because they wanted to balance solo and three-player, and they just didn't get around to duos. If enough people complain, FromSoftware might add it in later. Until then, you can use matchmaking or chat programs to play. Nightreign is still cool with its roguelite style and fun combat, even if the duo thing is a bummer.
Elden Ring Nightreign doesn’t have two-player co-op because FromSoftware thought three-player was more balanced. Some fans are mad, but the studio might change things. For now, team up with two others or go it alone in Limveld. Even without duos, Nightreign is a fun game.
