64GB RAM is arriving in gaming laptops faster than most buyers expected. Once seen as overkill, it is now a flagship option from Razer, ASUS, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and MSI. This is not just a bigger number on a spec sheet. Games ask for more memory. Laptops now juggle more background tasks.
Soldered memory is changing how people think about upgrades. At the same time, DRAM prices keep climbing, making that extra memory cost more than ever. Put together, these shifts show manufacturers now expect a gaming laptop to do far more than just run games well.
32GB is not becoming inadequate for gaming on its own. Competitive titles at 1080p still run smoothly within that limit. Most AAA games at 1440p do too. What is changing is everything running alongside the game.
Modern ray-traced titles, high-resolution texture streaming, and frame-generation features can raise the overall memory demands of a gaming system, especially once background software gets layered on top.
Most players now run overlays, voice chat apps, capture tools, and Windows Copilot processes at the same time as their game. Each one claims a slice of memory that used to belong entirely to the game. For that combination of tasks, 32GB is becoming less comfortable rather than obsolete.
Buyers who game and create content are pushing manufacturers toward higher default memory tiers. Lenovo markets the Legion Pro 7 directly to users who edit 4K footage, run virtual machines, or work in Blender between sessions. For that audience, 32GB can become a real constraint once gaming is combined with memory-heavy creative or development work.
Vendors have noticed the overlap between gaming and content-creation buyers and are increasingly serving both groups with one 64GB configuration rather than splitting the lineup. That is part of why 64GB now shows up on flagship 16-inch and 18-inch chassis paired with high-end RTX 50-series GPUs rather than on mid-range models built for casual play.
Not every gaming laptop can reach 64GB, and the reason comes down to chip architecture rather than price alone.
Arrow Lake-HX and AMD HX-series laptops often use SO-DIMM slots, allowing buyers to start with less RAM and upgrade later. Thin-and-light laptops with soldered LPDDR5X memory offer no such option. Their RAM is fixed at purchase, making the 64GB choice more important from the start.
None of this capacity is arriving cheaply. The DRAM market entered a severe supply crunch through 2026 as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron redirected fabrication capacity toward high-bandwidth memory built for AI data centers. TrendForce reported DRAM contract prices rising by as much as 90 to 95 % quarter-on-quarter in early 2026.
Gartner has projected cumulative memory price growth near 130 % by the end of the year. CNBC reported in January 2026 that a Micron executive described the company's high-bandwidth memory output as sold out for the year.
That reallocation has also tightened supply across consumer memory markets, raising the cost of the DDR5 and LPDDR5X configurations used in gaming laptops. Analysts at Tom's Hardware do not expect prices to normalize before 2027 or 2028. A 64GB configuration that once carried a modest premium over 32GB now adds a far larger jump to the final price tag.
For most buyers, the decision now depends less on raw gaming headroom and more on how the laptop will actually be used day to day. Esports titles at 1080p remain comfortable on 16GB or 32GB.
The push toward 64GB is being driven by heavier AAA sessions, multitasking-heavy setups, and the growing number of gamers who also render, stream, or code on the same machine. All at a moment when memory has become one of the most expensive parts on the spec sheet.

Memory capacity is turning into a permanent decision rather than a future upgrade path, as more gaming laptops solder RAM directly to the board and DRAM prices stay elevated into 2027. Buyers who wait to decide later may find there is no later left to decide.
Gaming laptops are increasingly used for more than gaming. Streaming, video editing, development, AI applications, and heavy multitasking can consume substantial memory, making higher-capacity configurations more relevant.
RAM capacity mainly matters when a system does not have enough memory for its workload. Once sufficient RAM is available, adding more capacity typically has a limited effect on frame rates.
For most buyers, 32GB is the practical middle ground. It provides enough capacity for modern games while leaving room for background applications and demanding multitasking.
64GB becomes more useful when a laptop regularly handles memory-intensive workloads alongside gaming, such as professional editing, software development, virtual machines, or local AI applications.
Look at the GPU, processor, display, cooling system, storage, and upgrade ability as well. These components collectively determine the laptop's gaming performance and overall usefulness.
