Wordle was created by him for his partner, Palak Shah. Initially, the game consisted of 13,000, five-letter English words. Palak Shah helped Wardle expand the word list by around 2,000 more commonly used words. The software engineer created the prototype with this expansive word list and kept the game archived till 2014.
Wardle revived the game again during the COVID-19 pandemic, after being inspired by The New York Times' Spelling Bee puzzles. The game’s rebirth was a way to pass the time and keep the two (Wardle and his partner) occupied during the pandemic. He ended up sharing the Wordle website with his close ones, to involve them in the fun experience of solving the challenging puzzles.
The game’s popularity quickly grew between his friends and family. Seeing this popularity, Wardle made Wordle available online by January 2021. Since then, it has continued to explode online, having millions of daily users. This garnered NYT’s attention who later bought it.
