India’s online gaming sector has been one of the fastest-growing digital industries. In 2023, the market was worth about Rs. 33,000 crore (around $ 3.7 million). Industry reports had projected it would grow to Rs. 66,000 crore (around $7.4 million) by 2028.

Fantasy sports platforms such as Dream11 had become household names, attracting more than 180 million users by 2023. Foreign investors were also pouring in money, with expected FDI inflows of nearly Rs. 50,000 crore by 2025.

The new law, however, changed everything overnight. Platforms like Dream11 and Mobile Premier League (MPL) had to stop all money-based games. Dream11 reportedly lost 95% of its revenue, while MPL announced plans to lay off nearly 60% of its Indian staff - about 300 employees - and shift focus to free-to-play gaming markets abroad.

Industry experts fear that foreign investors will now stay away from India, jobs will vanish, and many gaming companies may move their operations to other countries. There is also the danger that banned games could resurface on illegal offshore platforms, creating risks for players with no consumer protections.

The e-sports sector in India grew from Rs. 750 crore in 2020 to Rs. 970 crore in 2021, with a sharp rise in both players and viewers. The inclusion of e-sports in the 2025 Khelo India Youth Games shows that the government sees it as a legitimate sport, not just entertainment.
