Take-Two Interactive is almost ready with the two biggest releases of the year: Borderlands 4 and GTA 6. While the GTA 6 release rumor has long been circulated in the gaming world, Borderlands 4 was announced with its scheduled release date at the PlayStation’s State of Play 2025. Interestingly, these two are the biggest cards Take-Two Interactive currently has, and presumably, the Borderlands 4 release date gives a clearer picture of the GTA 6 launch.
Like every year, PlayStation State of Play has brought multiple anticipated upcoming game trailers, but Borderlands 4 outshined everyone else at the event. When players were already satisfied with the announcement trailer of the game, Gearbox Software, the developer, announced the release date to be September 23, 2025, which is again the fall season.
This upcoming installment of the Borderlands series looks to be the most impressive, with multiple new features added to it, including a new in-game planet named Planet Kairos. Players will keep exploring this planet and fighting formidable enemies throughout to finally reach the end boss, the Timekeeper.
Unlike the previous installments, Borderlands 4 has worked on improving the mobility with features of the gamers by introducing double jump, gliding, dodging, and a grappling hook. These fresh additions will bring a new dynamic to the classic looter-shooter gameplay. Apart from that, it is bringing a new type of protagonist, Vault Hunters, to make the gameplay exciting.
GTA 6’s announcement trailer in December 2023 took the gaming world by storm and broke records. Anyway, Rockstar Games was silent for a long time after that, but breaking this silence a week back, it revealed that GTA 6 is set to launch during the fall of 2025. This has further stirred the community, and predictions about the approximate launch date began.
Interestingly, GTA 6 is set in the fictional city of Leonida, which is a game version of Miami and includes the iconic Vice City. As per the trailer and the leaked footage, the storyline of this game follows a criminal duo, Lucia and Jason. Here, this upcoming game has broken the long-carried traditions and featured the first playable female protagonist of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
GTA 6 is expected to break all the records with its console release in the fall of 2025, and with the release date of Borderlands 4, players are assuming that Take-Two Interactive is hinting at the release time of GTA 6 by narrowing down the release window.
Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of both Rockstar Games and Gearbox Software. This technically means, though the developer companies are different, GTA 6 and Borderlands 4 are both Take-Two Interactive’s games. Therefore, naturally, the company must have decided on the best strategy so GTA 6 doesn’t overshadow Borderlands 4.
While releasing both flagship titles around the same time may raise questions, the CEO of the company, Strauss Zelnick’s statement cleared things up. He mentioned, “I think it's safe to say that we wouldn't, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily." Along with that, he emphasized that necessary gaps are required to ensure the success of each major release.
This statement doesn’t clarify anything about the GTA 6 release date, but after getting the late September release date of Borderlands 4, players have been assuming that GTA 6 will come in the last two months of the fall season, which are October and November. That’s because no game will probably be interested in competing with GTA 6, even though it’s from Take-Two Interactive. In that case, this gap between these two releases will allow each title to get it deserved popularity.
This strategy will not only maximize the commercial success of both games but also provide gamers with enough opportunities to experience both games. When the result of the clash with GTA 6 is well-known, Take-Two Interactive must allow some interval between these two games.
To conclude, it is hard to state anything for sure at this moment. The GTA 6 release date is still a mystery without any concrete proof to state it will not be going to overlap with Borderlands 4. It’s just that players assume it will come later because Take-Two Interactive probably won’t want to spoil the fun of Borderlands 4.
