Intel's August 2026 research highlights this organizational gap. It found 74% of surveyed leaders expect workforce planning and robotics strategy to become inseparable by 2030. Only 40% currently reported having a formal human-robot workforce strategy. This gap could create room for a dedicated executive role.

Deloitte also identifies these issues as constraints on broader robotics growth. A future robotics executive would therefore need more than engineering knowledge. The role would demand business judgment and risk management.

Humanoid Robots Could Accelerate the Need

Humanoid robots have attracted major attention during 2026. Several companies are moving from demonstrations toward commercial deployments. Xpeng's CEO He Xiaopeng announced he would personally lead the company's robotics division. The company is targeting mass production of its IRON humanoid by late 2026. 

Agility Robotics has also unveiled Digit 5 for commercial applications. The company says it has more than USD 300 million in multiyear orders. These developments do not guarantee widespread humanoid adoption. Commercial economics, safety, reliability, and deployment timelines remain open questions. Still, more capable robots could increase the need for centralized leadership.

Will Chief Robotics Officers Become Common?

The title may emerge gradually, with some companies initially appointing robotics heads, vice presidents, or chief automation leaders. The responsibilities may also sit with existing CTOs or COOs for years. Much will depend on how deeply robotics enters daily operations.

A dedicated chief robotics officer becomes more plausible when robot fleets are large, business-critical, and spread across multiple functions. The broader trend is already visible. Organizations are shifting from isolated automation projects toward integrated human-robot operations.
