Tokenization is moving from a blockchain experiment into financial market infrastructure. For financial analysts, understanding it is increasingly important because tokenized assets can change how securities are issued, traded, settled, valued and used as collateral.

Tokenization essentially represents ownership or claims on traditional assets such as bonds, funds, credit or real estate on programmable digital ledgers. According to RWA.xyz, distributed tokenized real-world assets are worth about $36.14 billion on August 11, up nearly 1.81% over 30 days. Stablecoins, which provide much of the settlement liquidity for blockchain markets, were worth another $296.46 billion, down 3.19% in the last 30 days.

Tokenized Markets are Becoming Material

The growth rate is difficult for analysts to ignore. CoinGecko found that tokenized real-world assets increased 256.7% between the beginning of 2025 and March 31, 2026, rising from $5.42 billion to $19.32 billion under its narrower market-cap methodology. Tokenized US Treasuries alone crossed $10 billion in February 2026.

Traditional financial institutions are also moving beyond testing. In July, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation successfully converted DTC-held securities into tokens and processed them through real production trades. DTCC plans to launch its tokenization service in October 2026 and has worked with more than 50 financial firms, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, BNP Paribas and Charles Schwab.

Europe has also seen close to €4 billion of DLT-based fixed-income issuance since 2021, according to figures cited by the European Central Bank.

Tokenization Adds New Market Data for Analysts

For analysts, tokenization introduces a new layer of data. Traditional metrics such as cash flow, credit quality, duration and valuation remain essential, but they may need to be combined with on-chain information such as token supply, wallet concentration, transfers, settlement activity and liquidity.

Crucially, tokenization does not automatically create liquidity. Recent research examining tokenized Treasuries, gold and private credit found substantial differences in trading activity between asset categories, meaning a large tokenized asset value does not necessarily translate into an active secondary market.

Analysts therefore need to distinguish the underlying asset from the structure through which investors gain exposure.

Settlement, Capital Efficiency Matter

The technology may also reshape post-trade analysis. BIS Project Agorá demonstrated atomic settlement of cross-border wholesale transactions using tokenized commercial bank deposits and central-bank reserves. This could reduce reconciliation steps, settlement delays and fragmented liquidity.
