ChatGPT 5 by OpenAI was launched on August 7, 2025, as the company’s flagship AI model for both free and paid users. It replaced older versions such as GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.5. ChatGPT 5 uses a unified design that can adjust between giving quick responses and performing deeper, slower reasoning when needed. It has been made available across ChatGPT and the API, with a gradual rollout to all eligible users.
xAI introduced Grok 4 on July 9, 2025, along with a more powerful version called Grok 4 Heavy. This heavier version is aimed at complex problem-solving and is initially available only to high-tier subscribers. Grok 4 focuses on real-time information retrieval, live tool use, and integration with other systems. Soon after launch, xAI introduced a free tier with limited daily usage to attract a wider audience, although Grok 4 Heavy and some advanced features remain exclusive to paying users.
ChatGPT 5 uses an internal router that decides whether to use a faster, lighter model or a deeper, more capable reasoning model depending on the task. Grok 4, on the other hand, puts emphasis on its real-time abilities. It includes built-in search tools, integrates live data from the web, and supports agent-like behaviors for complex workflows. Grok 4 Heavy is designed to run parallel reasoning processes, giving it potential advantages in large-scale, demanding projects such as research, simulations, and high-volume analytics.
The AI model is offered to all ChatGPT users, though the amount of usage depends on the subscription plan. Free users can use the full GPT-5 model within their limit, after which a smaller “mini” version may take over. Paid plans like Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise receive higher limits or unlimited usage, with Pro users also gaining access to GPT-5 Pro.
Grok 4 started as an exclusive feature for Premium+ and SuperGrok subscribers. Later, a free tier was launched worldwide, allowing limited daily queries in Auto or Expert mode. However, certain features like Grok 4 Heavy, image generation, and video generation remain locked behind higher-priced subscription tiers.

While many users have praised its improved instruction following, safer responses, and better overall performance, others feel it is more of a refinement than a revolutionary leap. Complaints include reduced creativity, the removal of older models from the free tier, usage caps on its ‘Thinking’ mode, and inconsistent performance in certain real-world tasks. Some users have voiced disappointment on forums and social media, with a few even canceling their subscriptions.
