Union Budget 2023 has new plans for AI-related R&D – Three centres of excellence for AI are yet to be set up

According to insiders, the government plans to establish three centres of excellence for artificial intelligence research and development. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on February 1 that the government will establish three centres of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) research and development in India. This aligns with the country's IT industry's push for and expectation of AI-related advancement to overtake technology trends in 2023.

Sitharaman stated at the Union Budget 2023 that this measure would assist accomplish the aim of 'Make AI in India, Make AI work for India.' Agriculture, health, and sustainable cities will be among the primary priority areas for developing AI-based solutions.

"Three centres of excellence for AI will be set up to realize the vision of 'make AI in India and make AI work for India'. This will be set up in top leading educational institutions. Leading industry players will partner in conducting inter-disciplinary research, develop cutting-edge applications and scalable problem solutions in the areas of agriculture, health, and sustainable cities," Sitharaman said. "This will galvanize an effective AI ecosystem and nurture quality human resources in the field" she added.
