AI algorithms can be used to date ancient human remains by analyzing their DNA. By analyzing DNA with the help of artificial intelligence, an international research team led by Lund University in Sweden has developed a method that can accurately date up to ten-thousand-year-old human remains. They developed a method that uses machine learning to identify genomes in dead organisms to determine how far they date back. Researchers developed a method called Temporal Population Structure (TPS) that can detect date genomes that are up to 10,000 years old.

The method, based on the ratio between two different carbon isotopes, has revolutionized archaeology. There has been no major development in ancient dating remains since the development of radiocarbon dating 80 years ago. Accurate dating of ancient humans is essential for mapping how people migrated throughout world history. The only alternative is archaeological dating, which is far more subjective, but was the first method to be used.

The researchers do not expect TPS to eliminate radiocarbon dating but rather see the method as a complementary tool in the paleogeographic toolbox. Radiocarbon dating can be very unstable and is affected by the quality of the material examined. Our method is DNA-based, which makes it very robust. But radiocarbon dating isn't always accurate, and results depend on the quality and quantity of the material available to date.

It is based on the DNA sequence, which can now be sequenced more easily and accurately than before using a very little amount of organic material. TPS gives archaeologists another method to date specimens, and it could help in cases where there isn't enough of a sample to perform radioactive carbon dating and could help verify age estimates. Now we can seriously begin to trace the origins of ancient people and map their migration routes.
