National Technology Day is an Indicator of India's Advancement and Growth in Tech

Every year, India celebrates National Technology Day on May 11. On this day in 1998, India successfully carried out nuclear tests at Pokhran Test Range, which was led by India's former President, Late Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. Soon after this test, India entered into a group of nations that had nuclear power. Since then the country has been celebrating technological innovation and advancements every year. This year's theme according to the Technology Development Board is "Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future".

Analytics Insight decided to commemorate this huge success and celebration by recognizing the top 5 disruptive technologies that can boost sustainability this year.

1. Artificial Intelligence

AI has been an intelligent addition to our economy. This disruptive technology plays a pivotal role in attaining sustainability goals. AI-powered farming techniques aid in reducing water usage. AI-based intelligent grid systems can efficiently manage and predict the demand and supply of renewable energy. Reducing traffic jams and increasing the autonomous capacity of vehicles are also useful in reducing carbon footprint. Google's DeepMind has developed an AI system that trains itself and directs the system to minimize energy use for cooler data centers.

2. Satellite Mapping

Satellite imagery provides a bird's eye view of everything, be it a construction site or a city. It can also be used in natural disaster recovery, supply chain visibility, and other important scenarios. Government can efficiently use this technology to plan and deploy climate adaptation infrastructures, restoration projects, overlooking deforestation, and in implementing environment-friendly plans and can measure its impact through satellite images.

3. Vertical Farming

India was introduced to vertical farming in 2019 and has since then seen the development of many startups in this area. Vertical farming uses precision farming technologies to grow food indoors under a controlled agricultural environment. This can be done using skyscrapers, buildings, etc., in a vertically stacked manner by artificially controlling the conditions required to grow plants, like light, temperature, humidity, and water. Vertical farming will be highly beneficial for India considering the land, food, and climate crisis.

4. Blockchain

Blockchain can boost sustainability by enhancing transparency in different processes. Companies can leverage this disruptive technology to cross-check and verify their eco-friendly initiatives and measure their impacts. The three R's of a sustainable economy is reducing waste, reusing, and recycling. Blockchain can aid this scenario by enabling efficient traceability and providing information about actually sustainable products, especially in e-commerce and the fashion industry, and ensure that consumers are making green choices.

5. Electric Vehicles

Several pieces of research have proved electric vehicles to be beneficial for a sustainable environment. Although there have been discussions going on regarding the amount of carbon footprint put forth by these electric cars, there are alternatives. Methane-powered gasoline engines and hydrogen motors are viable methods to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Electric vehicles with these sustainable engines can be effective in the coming years.
