Overview

  • YouTube recommendations use watch history, searches, subscriptions, likes and feedback to personalise your homepage and Up Next suggestions.

  • You can reset recommendations by deleting or pausing watch and search history through YouTube settings on desktop or mobile.

  • Fine-tune suggestions by removing individual videos, using feedback tools, unsubscribing from unwanted channels and watching preferred content.

YouTube’s homepage can feel uncannily good at suggesting videos—until it starts pushing content you watched once out of curiosity. If your feed drifted into gaming clips, conspiracy videos, old recipes or endless Shorts, you do not have to live with it. You can remove the signals that led YouTube there, then train it again with the videos you actually want to watch.

Resetting recommendations means deleting or pausing the history that shapes them. Fine-tuning means keeping your history but telling YouTube which videos and channels to avoid. Both are useful, and the best approach depends on how far your feed has gone off track.

How YouTube recommendations work

YouTube says its recommendation system learns from your viewing habits and compares them with habits of viewers with similar interests. The main signals include your watch history, search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, “Not interested” choices and “Don’t recommend channel” feedback.

Your homepage is primarily personalised by watch history. Up Next suggestions rely more heavily on the video you are currently watching. That is why one late-night rabbit hole can change your homepage, while a single unrelated video can change what appears after it.

Deleting history does not guarantee a completely fresh feed, because YouTube may also use Google Account activity and other signals. But clearing watch and search history removes much of the recent data driving unwanted suggestions.

Delete YouTube watch history

On desktop:

  1. Open YouTube and sign in.

  2. Click History in the left-hand menu.

  3. Click Clear all watch history.

  4. Confirm when prompted.

On mobile:

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.

  2. Tap Settings.

  3. Go to History & privacy.

  4. Tap Clear watch history and confirm.

This removes your watch history and can make your homepage less personalised. If you delete watch history and turn it off, YouTube says it will stop showing video recommendations on the homepage.

Clear or pause search history

Search history influences future recommendations, so clearing it helps if your feed was affected by searches you no longer care about.

On desktop:

  1. Click your profile picture.

  2. Go to Settings.

  3. Select History & privacy.

  4. Click Clear search history and confirm.

On mobile:

  1. Tap your profile picture.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. Tap History & privacy.

  4. Tap Clear search history and confirm.

To pause search history, use the same History & privacy menu and select Pause search history. YouTube says turning off history prevents your searches from influencing future recommendations, search results and other experiences that rely on history. Remember to resume it later if you want personalised suggestions again.

Remove individual videos

You do not always need a full reset. If one topic has taken over your feed, remove only the videos responsible. On desktop, open History, find the video, click the three-dot menu beside it and select Remove from watch history.

On mobile, tap your profile picture, open History, find the video, tap the three-dot menu and choose Remove from watch history. This is the least disruptive option because it keeps the rest of your viewing data intact.

Use YouTube’s feedback tools

When an unwanted video appears on your Home or Watch Next feed, use the three-dot menu beside its title. On the desktop, select Not interested. You can also choose "Tell us why” and pick reasons such as “I’ve already watched the video” or “I don’t like the video.”

If an entire channel keeps appearing, select Don’t recommend a channel. On mobile, tap the three-dot menu beside the video and choose the same option.

These signals tell YouTube what to avoid recommending. If you later change your mind, you can clear this feedback through My Activity by selecting YouTube ‘Not interested’ feedback and choosing Delete.

Manage subscriptions and engagement

Subscriptions, likes and dislikes also shape recommendations. Unsubscribe from channels you no longer watch, especially if their uploads no longer match your interests. Like videos you genuinely enjoy, and use dislikes sparingly but honestly.

For a better feed, watch a few complete videos in the subjects you want more of. Search deliberately for those topics, subscribe to useful creators and avoid clicking on sensational thumbnails that do not reflect what you want.

Keep your homepage relevant

Once your feed improves, maintain it with small, regular actions. Remove individual videos instead of clearing everything. Use Not interested immediately when something irrelevant appears. Pause watch history temporarily when researching something you do not want in your feed.

YouTube also lets mobile users reduce Shorts: on the Home feed, scroll to a Shorts grid, tap More at the top and choose Show fewer Shorts.

A better YouTube feed is not built in one click. It comes from clearing bad signals, giving clearer feedback and watching more of what you actually value.

FAQs

How do I reset YouTube recommendations?

Clear your YouTube watch history and search history in Settings under History & privacy. This reduces personalisation and removes recent signals shaping unwanted recommendations, though it does not guarantee a completely fresh feed.

Will deleting watch history remove all recommendations?

No. Deleting watch history reduces personalised homepage recommendations but does not guarantee a completely fresh feed. YouTube may still use other account activity and signals to influence suggestions and search results.

How do I stop a channel from appearing?

Tap the three-dot menu beside an unwanted video on your Home or Watch Next feed, then select “Don’t recommend channel.” You can clear this feedback later through your Google My Activity page.

Can I pause YouTube history temporarily?

Yes. Open YouTube Settings, go to History & privacy, then pause watch history or search history. Pausing prevents new activity from influencing future recommendations, search results and other history-based experiences.

How long does it take to improve recommendations?

There is no fixed timeframe. After clearing history, watch relevant videos, like useful content and use “Not interested” consistently. Your homepage should gradually become more relevant over several viewing sessions.
