After that, select the option for Address Update and carefully enter the new address details. Attach a scanned copy of a valid Proof of Address document, like a recent electricity bill, water bill, bank statement, passport, or any other acceptable proof.
After all the information has been verified and sent, a confirmation will be shown on the screen with a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) or Service Request Number (SRN) for future tracking.
The list of acceptable Proof of Address (PoA) documents is extensive. Commonly used proofs include a passport, bank statement or passbook, voter identity card, ration card, utility bills within the last 3 months, registered rent agreement, property tax receipt and more.
The name on the PoA document should match the name on the Aadhaar card. Minor spelling variations may still be accepted depending on verification norms.
If the user’s mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, online update via OTP will not work. In such cases, a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre becomes necessary.
For most applicants, the address update takes around 7 to 10 working days for verification and processing.
Updates performed online are currently free, according to official reports and media coverage.
Once the new address is approved, an updated Aadhaar (e-Aadhaar) can be downloaded from the portal.
