7 EV Fire Safety Rules Every Electric Car Owner Should Know

Santosh Kadali

Avoid Overnight Unattended Charging: Never leave your EV charging unattended overnight, especially in garages, as battery faults can trigger thermal runaway while you sleep, reducing response time and increasing fire risk significantly.

Use Certified Charging Equipment: Always use manufacturer-approved or certified chargers and cables, avoiding cheap, uncertified adapters that may overheat, short-circuit, or deliver inconsistent power, potentially damaging your EV's battery management system.

Park Away From Structures: Park your electric vehicle at least 15 feet from buildings, other cars, or flammable materials, minimizing fire spread risk if a battery incident occurs while parked at home or public lots.

Monitor Battery Health Regularly: Schedule periodic battery health checks with authorized service centers to detect early signs of degradation, cell imbalance, or cooling system failures that could precede dangerous thermal events.

Don't Charge After Collisions: Avoid charging your EV immediately after any accident or undercarriage impact, as hidden battery damage may not be visible but could short-circuit and ignite during the next charging session.

Keep a Class D Fire Extinguisher: Store a lithium-ion-rated Class D fire extinguisher in your garage or vehicle, since standard extinguishers are ineffective against battery fires, and specialized agents help contain thermal runaway incidents.

Know Emergency Shutdown Procedures: Familiarize yourself with your EV's emergency power-off switch or app-based shutdown features, enabling rapid battery disconnection in case of smoke, unusual heat, or warning alerts while driving.
