WhatsApp is rolling out a new search button for iPhone users, simplifying message searches inside conversations. The Meta-owned platform started the rollout in September 2026 after testing the shortcut in August.
The new WhatsApp search button appears when users scroll toward older messages in chats or Channels. It opens the existing search tool directly, removing the need to visit the chat information screen.
The WhatsApp iOS update currently reaches some users through a gradual rollout, with wider availability expected soon. WABetaInfo reported compatibility with WhatsApp for iOS version 26.36.74 during the rollout. The shortcut works across individual chats, group conversations and WhatsApp Channels on supported iPhones.
The new design also changes where the shortcut appears compared with its earlier beta version. During testing, WhatsApp placed the search control near the bottom-right corner of conversations. The current version moves the button near the top, directly below the navigation bar.
The button appears only while users scroll upward through older parts of a conversation. Returning to the latest messages removes the shortcut from the interface. This contextual approach keeps the chat screen cleaner while placing search closer to relevant content.
WABetaInfo described the change simply, saying, “The new search button appears at the top of the screen when users scroll up.” The report also confirmed that tapping the button activates search mode directly within the conversation.
The underlying chat search system remains unchanged with this WhatsApp update. Users can enter keywords and locate matching messages through the familiar search interface. The main change focuses on reducing navigation steps rather than introducing new search capabilities.
Previously, iPhone users needed to open a conversation and tap the contact or group name. The chat information screen then provided the existing Search option for finding older messages. WhatsApp now brings that entry point directly into the conversation.
WhatsApp Channels also receive the same shortcut, extending the feature beyond personal and group conversations. Channel users can search older updates without opening the Channel information screen first. This change could simplify searches across Channels with frequent posts and long histories.
The gradual rollout means the WhatsApp search button may not appear immediately on every iPhone. Updating the app can help, although account-level activation still controls availability. Users without the shortcut can continue using the existing search route through chat information.
The update therefore focuses on accessibility rather than changing how WhatsApp search works. For long chats, active groups and busy Channels, fewer navigation steps can make older messages easier to locate.
