International travel can involve unexpected medical bills, delayed flights, lost baggage or cancelled bookings. These events can create extra costs, especially when travelers are outside India. International travel insurance provides financial protection against several such risks, depending on the policy terms and coverage limits.
Meet Kapadia, Business Head at Policybazaar, said medical protection remains one of the main reasons travelers should consider insurance before going overseas. Healthcare costs can be high in several countries, while travel disruption can also lead to additional expenses.
Medical coverage forms a key part of most international travel insurance plans. Policies generally cover eligible emergency treatment, hospital stays and related medical expenses that arise during the insured trip.
Kapadia said, “Medical emergencies abroad can become extremely expensive, especially in countries where healthcare costs are high.” Therefore, travelers should check the medical coverage limit before buying a policy. The limit should match the destination, trip duration and traveler's needs.
Some policies also provide emergency medical evacuation. In such cases, an insurer may arrange or reimburse transport to the nearest suitable medical facility when medically required. Certain plans may also cover repatriation to India, subject to policy conditions.
However, travelers should read exclusions carefully. Pre-existing medical conditions may not receive automatic coverage. In addition, some plans place restrictions on treatment linked to alcohol, drugs, self-inflicted injuries or activities not covered under the policy.
Travel insurance can also provide financial support when baggage is delayed or permanently lost by an airline. Compensation depends on the policy limit and the conditions mentioned in the insurance document.
Several plans also cover eligible costs linked to passport loss. This may include assistance or reimbursement for expenses involved in obtaining temporary or replacement travel documents while overseas.
Meanwhile, flight delays and trip delays may qualify for compensation under certain policies. Insurers can cover eligible additional costs such as accommodation or meals after a delay crosses the minimum period stated in the policy.
Trip cancellation coverage works differently. It generally reimburses eligible non-refundable expenses when a traveler cancels a journey for a reason covered by the policy. Travelers should therefore review the list of accepted cancellation reasons before purchasing insurance.
Insurers offer several types of international travel insurance. A single-trip policy covers one overseas journey, while multi-trip insurance serves people who travel several times internationally during the policy period.
Student travel insurance caters to people studying abroad. Depending on the plan, it may include medical treatment, study interruption, sponsor protection and personal belongings. Family travel insurance can cover eligible family members under one policy.
Premiums vary based on factors such as the traveler's age, destination, trip duration, coverage amount and type of policy. Optional benefits, including adventure sports protection, can also affect the final premium.
Therefore, travelers should compare medical limits, baggage protection, personal liability, emergency assistance and claim procedures instead of choosing a plan based only on price.
Travelers should purchase travel insurance before starting their international journey. Many insurers require the policy to begin before departure from India. Some destinations may also require proof of insurance during the visa process.
Kapadia said medical protection has received greater attention since the pandemic because overseas treatment can place a heavy financial burden on travelers. However, coverage for COVID-19 and other illnesses varies between insurers.
Travelers should also check exclusions, deductibles, claim limits, and emergency contact details. They should keep digital and printed copies of the policy while traveling.
International travel insurance can cover medical emergencies, baggage problems, passport loss, trip cancellations and flight disruptions when the event meets the policy conditions. As coverage differs between insurers, travelers should review the policy wording and select a plan suited to their destination, travel period and individual requirements.
