Tata Sons is ready to invest more in Air India. The company has approved fresh funding of more than Rs. 10,000 crore for the airline. In 2021, the Tata Group acquired Air India by investing Rs. 18,000 crore, and after recent disasters, this investment shows the company remains serious about rebuilding the airline. The new funding could help Air India improve its fleet, services and network.
However, the approval came with some conditions. The decision was made during the June board meeting, which was chaired by N. Chandrasekaran and attended by Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and vice-chairman Venu Srinivasan. According to report sources who have attended the meeting, “Any capital infusion will require Air India and other investee companies to present a business case when funding is sought.”
The approval came after a year-long pause by Tata Sons on fresh funding for Air India. In the meantime, the airline got into losses of around Rs. 22,238 crore in FY26. Its debt also stood at around Rs. 40,000 crore across 11 lenders. Tata Sons owns 73.8% of Air India, while Singapore Airlines owns 24.7%.
Air India needs more investment as it expands its network. The airline is also trying to build a stronger presence in international markets. It now operates more than 1,200 international flights every month across five continents.
The latest Tata investment could give Air India more chances to improve its flights and expand its services. It could also help the airline compete more strongly in a market that IndiGo has been dominating for years now.
Notably, Air India has around 200 aircraft and a strong international network. IndiGo, however, has a much bigger hold on the domestic market. It had a 67.4% domestic market share in July 2026.
The Rs. 10,000 crore funding gives Air India another chance to speed up its recovery. Money alone, however, will not be enough. The airline will need better service, smoother operations and stronger domestic growth to take on IndiGo. For Tata Group, the next few years could decide whether its big Air India bet pays off.
