India has launched a new Aadhaar app to simplify identity verification. The Unique Identification Authority of India released the full version of the app on January 28, 2026. The launch happened on Data Privacy Day and focused on making Aadhaar services fully digital.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the app at an official event. Minister of State Jitin Prasada joined the program. UIDAI streamed the launch live on its YouTube channel. The new Aadhaar app aims to reduce paperwork and remove the need for frequent centre visits.
The most important and useful feature of the Aadhaar app is the mobile number update service. Previously, people had to visit an Aadhaar centre for this task. Users can now update their mobile numbers from home. The app uses face authentication and one-time passwords for verification.
The app also allows address updates through secure verification. Users can submit requests directly in the app. No physical documents are required. UIDAI said this feature will help people in villages and remote areas where centres are far away.
The Aadhaar app supports up to five profiles on one mobile phone. All profiles must link to the same registered mobile number. This feature helps families manage Aadhaar details for children and elderly members easily.
Privacy is a major focus of the new Aadhaar app. Selective sharing lets users show only the needed details, such as name or photo. The full 12-digit Aadhaar number stays hidden. Masked Aadhaar lowers the risk of data misuse during verification.
Offline verification is another useful feature. The app uses secure QR codes to confirm identity without internet access. This works at hotels, airports, banks, and government offices. A biometric lock option gives extra protection by controlling access to biometric data.
The new Aadhaar app works along with the existing mAadhaar app. It does not replace it. The mAadhaar app still supports downloads and PVC card orders. The new app focuses on identity control, updates, and privacy.
The Aadhaar app is available on Android and iOS through official app stores. UIDAI informed that some features may roll out slowly across regions.
The launch of the Aadhaar app shows India’s push toward easy and paper-free identity services. With home updates and safe sharing, the app aims to simplify Aadhaar usage for everyone.
