Gemini Live Could Soon Work Without an Internet Connection

Google is reportedly working on an offline mode for Gemini Live, based on references discovered in its Android app code. The feature could allow users to have AI-powered voice conversations without an internet connection, potentially using on-device AI processing. Google has not confirmed its availability or supported devices.

Google is reportedly developing an offline mode for Gemini Live that could allow users to have AI-powered voice conversations without an active internet connection. The feature was spotted in the latest version of Google's Android app, suggesting that the company is exploring ways to make its conversational AI assistant more accessible.

According to an Android Authority report, an analysis of Google app version 17.71.17 revealed two references to the upcoming feature. One is labeled "Offline mode", while another describes it as an option to "Use Gemini Live without an internet connection".

Google has not officially announced the feature or confirmed when it will become available. However, its arrival could make Gemini Live more useful in areas with poor network coverage or during flights.

Gemini Live Could Use On-Device AI

The biggest question is how Google plans to make the feature work without cloud connectivity. Gemini Live currently relies on internet access to process voice inputs, generate responses, and maintain real-time conversations.

One possibility is that Google could use Gemini Nano, its lightweight AI model designed to run directly on compatible Android devices. This would allow smartphones to handle certain requests locally instead of sending every query to Google's servers.

However, running AI conversations directly on a phone could come with limitations. Offline responses may take longer and could be less accurate than those generated through Google's cloud-based systems.

Camera and Screen Sharing Support Remains Unclear

Gemini Live currently supports features such as camera access and screen sharing, allowing users to discuss objects, images, and on-screen information with the AI assistant. It is not yet clear whether these capabilities will work in offline mode. Google's app code does not reveal which devices, languages, or specific functions will receive offline support.

The feature could initially focus on basic voice conversations and simpler requests rather than offering the complete Gemini experience.

Google Continues to Expand Gemini Live

The reported offline mode would add another capability to Google's conversational AI platform. Recent updates have introduced features such as Guided Vision and live translation, making Gemini Live more useful for everyday interactions.

If introduced, offline access could help Google compete in the growing market for on-device AI assistants. For now, users will have to wait for an official announcement and details about supported smartphones.
