The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey has triggered strong reactions online, with viewers divided over its modern dialogue and accents.
The film, produced by Universal Pictures, released its first footage this week. While many praised the scale and visuals, criticism quickly followed after a scene featuring Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland went viral. In the clip, Pattinson’s character tells Holland’s Telemachus, “You’re pining for a daddy you never knew.”
The line spread rapidly across X, Reddit, and TikTok, with users mocking the use of the word ‘daddy’ in a film based on Greek mythology. Many viewers said the dialogue sounded too modern for a story tied to Homer’s ancient epic.
Criticism also focused on the accents used throughout the trailer. Several characters speak with contemporary American accents instead of the formal style audiences often associate with historical dramas.
Some viewers called the tone distracting and said the film felt more like a modern fantasy than a classical epic. Others argued the dialogue sounded written for internet culture rather than mythology.
At the same time, many defended Nolan’s creative choices. Supporters pointed out that ancient Greeks did not speak British English either and argued that modern dialogue could make the story easier for younger audiences to connect with.

Despite the backlash, excitement around the film remains high. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron also part of the cast.
Nolan has often taken unconventional approaches in films like Oppenheimer and Interstellar, and the early debate around The Odyssey shows the audience is already paying close attention. The film is scheduled to release on July 17, 2026. However, the trailer has played its part in piquing the viewers’ interest.
