Apple’s first foldable iPhone may not arrive in the market as expected. Recent reports suggest the company is facing durability issues with the phone’s hinge during internal testing. The issue could delay Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment, where companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Google already have multiple products.

According to supply-chain leaks and industry reports, some prototype units reportedly failed to maintain hinge stability after repeated folding tests. Test devices allegedly developed slight alignment issues and noises around the hinge mechanism during long-term usage simulations.

Apple Focuses on Durability Before Foldable Launch

Apple is reportedly testing new hinge structures, including lightweight designs made with 3D-printing technology. The tech giant is focusing on reducing thickness while improving durability. Reports suggest that the current designs still do not meet Apple’s internal standards.

The foldable iPhone has remained one of Apple’s most closely watched projects for years. Reports have repeatedly claimed the company wants to avoid the problems seen in early foldable phones, including weak hinges, visible display creases, and screen damage over time.

Apple has delayed products in the past when hardware failed to meet performance expectations. Industry analysts believe the company is taking a cautious approach before entering the foldable segment.

Can Apple Perfect Foldables Without Major Compromises?

Analysts do not expect Apple to cancel the project. The company will develop a book-style foldable iPhone similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup. Reports also suggest Apple has been working with Samsung Display and LG Display on foldable display technology.

Earlier industry estimates pointed to a possible 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 series. However, the latest reports suggest the launch could move to 2027 if Apple fails to resolve the hinge reliability concerns.

Apple has not officially confirmed the foldable iPhone or commented on launch dates. The foldable smartphone market continues to grow globally, but durability is a major concern for buyers. Apple’s challenge now is not just designing a foldable iPhone, but one that avoids the compromises users already associate with foldable devices.
