Apple introduced selfie-based age verification with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, released on October 26. The feature lets eligible users confirm adulthood through facial age estimation instead of submitting government identification or credit card details. Apple offers the option in supported regions where age checks help meet local requirements.
Apple’s new age verification feature guides users through capturing their faces from four angles. Users follow on-screen prompts to tilt and turn their heads while the system estimates whether they qualify as adults.
The feature confirms an age category rather than establishing a person's identity, and availability depends on regional rules.
Apple combines on-device processing with its Private Cloud Compute system to complete selfie age verification. According to the company’s support documentation, Apple and other parties cannot access the images during processing.
The system deletes the captured selfie after successful verification, adding a privacy safeguard to the process.
The verification prompt may appear during Apple Account setup, software updates or attempts to access apps rated 18+. Certain safety settings may also require confirmation, depending on local regulations. Apple says users who successfully confirm adulthood should not need to repeat the process.
The selfie age verification option requires iOS 27.2 or iPadOS 27.2, or a later version of either operating system. Apple currently lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom among supported regions for the selfie option.
Other jurisdictions, including South Korea and Texas, have age verification requirements, although the same selfie method may not apply everywhere.
The feature may not appear for users in India, which Apple does not currently list among the supported selfie verification regions. Availability could change as regional requirements and Apple's rollout evolve.
The update adds another way to handle age restrictions without requesting traditional identity documents. However, Apple's age estimation does not replace identity verification, and users must rely on the options available in their region.
