Tata Motors retained the manufacturer lead in August with more than 13,000 electric-car registrations.
Mahindra XEV 9S topped August retail registrations with 3,743 units, narrowly ahead of Tata Punch EV and MG Windsor EV.
EV demand remains strong, with August registrations roughly 50% higher year-on-year and September already approaching 31,000 registrations.
India’s electric car market has reached a new scale. August 2026 saw 30,400 to 30,700 electric passenger-vehicle registrations, up about 50% to 52% from August 2025, when the market stood near 20,200 units. July had a stronger result at about 33,000 to 34,500 units, so August showed a month-to-month drop but kept the market far above last year’s level.
Tata Motors held the top spot among electric car makers in August, with more than 13,000 units. Mahindra followed with 6,408 units, while JSW MG Motor posted 4,602. VinFast reached about 2,198 units and moved ahead of Maruti Suzuki, which recorded about 1,405 units. Hyundai sold about 802 electric cars, while Kia reached about 640 and BYD about 542.
Tata and Mahindra together accounted for about two-thirds of India’s electric passenger-car registrations in August. Mahindra has built a strong challenge with its newer electric SUV range.
August retail data puts the Mahindra XEV 9S at the top with 3,743 units. Tata Punch EV followed with 3,468, while the MG Windsor EV reached 3,224. Tata Nexon EV came next with 2,769 units. The small gaps show a close race.
NDTV cited AutoPunditz wholesale dispatch data at 4,508 units for XEV 9S and 4,430 for Punch EV in August. Wholesale dispatches count vehicles sent to dealers, while retail registrations count vehicles registered for customers. The two figures measure different points in the sales chain, so they should not sit in one table.

The first half of 2026 tells a different story. The MG Windsor EV led the model table from January through June with 19,080 units. Mahindra XEV 9S followed with 18,074, while Tata Nexon EV reached 16,567. Tata Punch EV recorded 15,683, and Mahindra XEV 9e posted 11,242.
Tata Harrier EV reached 10,499 units in the same period. Maruti Suzuki e Vitara recorded 8,572, while Tata Curvv EV reached 7,281. Mahindra BE 6 stood at 6,849, and Tata Tiago EV reached 6,816. The figures show several strong models, not one clear leader across every period.
Tata’s strength comes from its broad electric car lineup. In August, Punch EV sales reached 3,468 units, while Nexon EV sales stood at 2,769. Tiago EV added 2,342 units, Harrier EV reached 1,786, Sierra EV posted 1,405, and Curvv EV reached 1,217. Xpres-T sales stood at 443, while Tigor EV sales came to just 3 units.
Punch EV stands out in this group. Its August volume rose about 137% from August 2025, although it fell about 13% from July. The result gives Tata a strong SUV volume base, while Nexon EV and Harrier EV cover larger vehicle classes.
September figures remain incomplete, so the month does not yet have a final total. A Vahan-based tracker had about 31,000 passenger EV registrations by September 26, with Tata near 42.5% share, Mahindra near 24%, and MG near 15%. The same source placed September near 31,000 units against about 30,000 in August. The final September number will clarify Mahindra’s pace and Tata’s lead.

Latest sales data shows a more competitive electric car market. Tata Motors still has the largest company-level volume, yet Mahindra has built a strong second position. MG retains major volume through the Windsor, while VinFast, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia add more choices.
SUVs now hold a major place in the sales race. XEV 9S, XEV 9e, Punch EV, Nexon EV and Harrier EV all post meaningful volumes, while the Windsor keeps a strong position. The market has moved well beyond its early small-hatchback phase.
The key shift sits between company and model leadership. Tata can lead the manufacturer table through a broad range of cars, while Mahindra, MG and Tata can trade places near the top of the model table. With August above 30,000 units and September already near that mark, the latest figures point to a larger and more competitive electric car market in India.
