Overview:

  • Group member tags simplify identification by showing roles and interests in large or busy chats.

  • Tags are optional, editable, and flexible, allowing different labels across multiple groups to be easily applied.

  • The feature reduces admin overhead, giving individuals full control without granting any administrative powers.

WhatsApp has rolled out a new 'group member tags' feature for Android users that will help people in a group chat to identify each other more easily. Initially, it is being offered to a limited number of beta testers. Still, this new feature gives every group member the right to label themselves with a short custom tag, such as 'Project Manager', 'Coach', or 'Foodie', next to their name.

What is the Group Member Tag Feature All About?

The tags under this feature are self-assigned, meaning you choose your own label rather than having an admin assign it. Here’s the idea behind the feature:

The idea: In each group chat, each participant can assign themselves a short custom tag that appears alongside their name. The tag feature aims to give clarity to group conversations, especially in large groups, community, or project-based chats.

Note: Each tag is meant to apply only within the specific group; one could be a ‘Designer’ in one group, and a ‘Gamer’ in another.  Tags remain across device changes or app reinstallation, provided one signs in with the same account.

How to Use it on Android (2025 Update): Step-by-Step

If you’re on the Android Beta and have access to the feature, here’s how you add or edit a group member tag:

  • Open WhatsApp on your Android phone.

  • Navigate to the group chat where you want to set your tag.

  • Tap the group name at the top to open the Group Info or Participants screen.

  • Locate your name in the participant list and tap it.

  • Select ‘Add tag’ or ‘Edit tag’ from the options that appear.

  • Enter your desired tag (up to 30 characters; special symbols, emojis, links, or verification marks are not allowed).

  • Save the tag. Once saved, your custom label will appear next to your name for all members in that group.

Note: You can edit or remove the tag at any time. As tags are self-assigned, the system becomes more flexible and easier to manage.

How Can Group Tags Improve Chat Clarity?

  • Easier Identification: In the case of large or busy groups, tags serve as an immediate recognition for the people along with their roles and interests, for example, 'Coordinator' or 'Finance Lead.'

  • Better Context: At workplaces, study groups, hobby groups, and communities, tags act as an invisible bridge between people, eliminating the need to repeat introductions.

  • No Admin Overhead: A user does not have to wait for an admin’s approval if he/she want to tag himself/herself.

  • Optional and Flexible: Tags are optional, so you can decide whether to use them. You can even have different tags in different groups.

Overall, it brings clarity without adding complexity to groups with large memberships of individuals playing different roles.

Final Take

WhatsApp’s new ‘group member tag’ feature for Android is an easy and efficient way to identify who a person is and which group chat roles they have. Users participating in a group chat can tag themselves with a designated role, such as ‘Designer’ or ‘Gamer,’ and the custom tag will show next to their name.

The feature helps identify a person’s role, duties, or areas of interest without having to go through introductions over and over. This is a flexible yet optional feature that doesn’t require admin approval.

However, not all Android users can access this latest feature. Tags are limited to 30 characters and must not have any special characters, links, or emojis. Also, tags do not empower the user in any way; they are purely for identification.

While the feature will slowly be rolled out for more users, there are also plans for an iOS integration in the future.
