AI agents are beginning to buy API access, pay for computing resources and settle digital services without waiting for a human to approve every transaction. That creates a new infrastructure challenge: payment networks must be inexpensive, predictable and fast enough for machine-to-machine commerce.

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is positioning itself for this market. In June 2026, Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, adding tools that allow AI agents to create wallets, check balances, track transactions and make payments using XRP or RLUSD. 

XRPL has the Speed Agents Need

XRPL transactions typically reach deterministic finality in 3-5 seconds. Once a transaction appears in a validated ledger with a successful result, an agent can treat the payment as complete and continue its workflow. 

XRPL documentation lists throughput of around 1,500 transactions per second, while transaction fees can start at just 0.00001 XRP. 

Those characteristics matter for agents making repeated low-value payments, where unpredictable gas costs could otherwise make automation difficult.

X402 Brings Machine Payments to XRPL

The AI Starter Kit also integrates the X402 payment protocol. This allows agents to pay for services such as API calls, AI-model inference, and computing resources using XRP or Ripple’s dollar-backed RLUSD stablecoin

Stablecoins may be particularly useful for autonomous systems since agents can budget in dollars without taking XRP price exposure.

XRPL also supports native multi-currency payments and a built-in decentralized exchange. An agent could potentially send one asset while the recipient receives another, with XRPL routing the conversion through available liquidity. 

Payment Channels Could Handle Micropayments

Not every agent interaction needs to become a separate on-chain transaction. XRPL’s Payment Channels allow users to create signed payment claims off-chain and settle the final amount on-chain later. A payer can repeatedly issue claims to a service provider, which redeems them when necessary. 

That architecture could suit agents purchasing thousands of tiny units of compute, data or API usage while reducing on-chain activity.

Scaling Still has Limits

XRPL’s current capacity is substantial, but 1,500 TPS would not automatically support unlimited global machine commerce.

If millions of agents eventually generate continuous micropayments, additional batching, payment channels and off-chain infrastructure would likely be necessary. Even XRPL’s built-in DEX executes trades only when a ledger closes every 3-5 seconds, and its documentation says it is not designed for high-frequency trading. 

Security is another challenge. Autonomous agents need spending limits, secure signing systems and safeguards preventing compromised software from draining wallets.

Final Thoughts

XRPL already has several properties useful for AI payments: 3–5 second finality, low fees, stablecoin support, payment channels and programmable agent tooling. 

It therefore appears technically capable of supporting meaningful agent-payment workloads today. Whether it can handle AI commerce at a global scale will depend less on raw blockchain throughput alone and more on payment channels, batching, liquidity and secure wallet controls developing alongside the agents themselves.
