Cross-border remittances remain one of cryptocurrency’s most significant potential real-world use cases. The value transfer for XRP, with the XRP Ledger (XRPL), may be quick and borderless, which could ease reliance on correspondent banking networks and pre-funded accounts.

The average price of a remittance is 6.36% of the value transferred, according to the most recent Remittance Prices Worldwide data provided by the World Bank. If the institution cuts five percentage points, the institution estimates that recipients will have over USD 16 billion more each year.

How XRP Can Support Remittances

Traditional international transfers occur through various intermediaries until they reach the recipient. This can cause delays in processing, foreign exchange expenses, and complexity in operation.

Digital assets can be utilized by Ripple's infrastructure for settlement, and XRP may serve as a bridge between different currencies. XRP can be obtained from one currency, transferred through the XRPL, and exchanged into the destination currency.

It would enable payment providers to have fewer pools of pre-funded capital in various markets. Ripple Payments now has over 60 markets available for first- and third-party payouts. The firm claims over USD 100 billion in payments have been made on the network, and it currently has over 85 regulatory licenses across the world.

Stablecoins Increase Competition

XRP is not the only blockchain solution competing for cross-border payments. Stablecoins can provide fast settlement with reduced price volatility of bridge assets. Ripple is increasingly going through a multi-asset plan that encompasses its dollar-backed RLUSD stablecoin and other stablecoins.

The company partnered with Bitso in June 2026 to facilitate more efficient enterprise settlement between the US and Mexico. It planned to launch the Mexican peso-backed MXNB on XRPL payment infrastructure alongside RLUSD.

Regulation Remains Critical

Remittances will not be transformed by quick blockchain settlement. Providers need to maintain banking relationships, FX liquidity, customer identification, anti-money laundering measures, and secure fiat on/off ramps.

Ripple has improved in this area. It was awarded an Electronic Money Institution licence and a cryptoasset registration from the UK Financial Conduct Authority in January 2026. In July, the firm was granted the complete MiCA Crypto Asset Service Provider accreditation in Luxembourg, which grants access to regulated cryptoasset services in all 30 EEA countries.

Although there are no guarantees that XRP will be widely adopted, these approvals may enable blockchain settlement to be part of a regulated financial infrastructure.

Why this Matters

Global remittance costs remain above 6%, leaving significant room for cheaper payment infrastructure. While XRP's blockchain settlement is fast, adoption must be regulated, liquidity must be ample, local currency connections must be established, and prices must be competitive to transform remittances.

Final Thoughts

XRP has technical properties ideal for cross-border settlement. However, transaction speed alone will not be the solution to revolutionize remittances.  Ripple's growing regulatory profile and payment system provide a boost to its standing.  Finally, XRP will have to compete with stablecoins, traditional payment networks, and developing digital payment services.

FAQs:

1. How can XRP be used for cross-border remittances?

XRP can function as a bridge asset between two currencies, allowing value to move through the XRP Ledger before being converted into the recipient’s local currency.

2. How large is Ripple’s global payment network?

Ripple Payments supports first- and third-party payouts across more than 60 markets. Ripple says its payment network has processed more than USD 100 billion in volume.

3. Could XRP reduce the cost of international remittances?

Blockchain settlement could potentially reduce some intermediary and pre-funding costs. However, the final cost also depends on FX liquidity, local banking infrastructure, compliance, and fiat conversion.

4. How do stablecoins compete with XRP for remittances?

Stablecoins can provide blockchain-based settlement while reducing exposure to the price volatility of bridge assets. Ripple itself is pursuing a multi-asset approach involving XRP, RLUSD, and other stablecoins.

5. What could determine XRP’s success in global remittances?

Success will depend on regulatory approval, sufficient liquidity, reliable fiat on- and off-ramps, and payment-provider adoption. XRP must also remain competitive with stablecoins and traditional payment networks.
