Every client an MSP signs arrives as its own Microsoft 365 tenant, with its own directory, licenses and admins, and Microsoft’s tooling largely respects that line. Microsoft 365 Lighthouse gives CSP partners one view across customer tenants, but it manages users, devices and security baselines, not backups. Microsoft 365 Backup protects data one tenant at a time, keeps the copy inside Microsoft’s boundary and offers retention of up to two years. An MSP with forty clients using native backup still manages forty tenant-level backup setups.
Third-party platforms fill that gap. On their datasheets, “multi-tenant” can mean anything from a tenant switcher to a full service-delivery layer. For backup, five things matter:
One console across all client tenants, with each client’s data and admins kept apart.
A shared license pool the MSP allocates and reclaims, instead of separate purchases per client.
Storage target, retention and immutability set per client.
Scoped access, so technicians see only the clients they manage and the provider account can run backups without reading client content.
Per-client reporting and billing data, and the MSP’s branding on anything the client sees.
The seven platforms below all provide central management across client tenants. They split on the rest, and most sharply on storage: who owns the bucket, where it sits and who earns the margin on it.
Published prices cover different packages. Included workloads, storage allowances and contract terms all affect the final cost.
MSP360 Managed Backup for Microsoft 365 is a cloud-to-cloud backup service for MSPs that protect many client domains from one web console. Domains are grouped by company, with client-level access, storage and usage reporting. The console and client dashboard can carry the MSP’s branding. The service is part of the MSP360 platform, which also covers endpoint backup, RMM, remote access and ticketing.
Key Features:
Each company’s backup destination can be MSP-owned Amazon S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2 or other S3-compatible storage, or MSP360-managed storage on AWS or Wasabi.
Data is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and HTTPS in transit. Properly configured Object Lock makes backups immutable on supported AWS, Wasabi and Backblaze B2 storage.
Licenses sit in one global pool. Domains draw on it automatically or up to a set cap, and licenses return to the pool after users deleted in Microsoft 365 are synchronized.
New users can be added to backup automatically, and protection can be configured for Microsoft 365 groups.
The provider account manages backups and retention but cannot access backup content. Client administrators can also grant users permission to sign in and restore their own data.
Restores work at item level or from a point in time, and mailboxes export to PST.
Datto SaaS Protection is a cloud-to-cloud backup service built for MSPs, covering Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams. One status page gives MSPs an overview of backups across client organizations, with individual organization views for further management. Datto has been a Kaseya brand since 2022. SaaS Protection is sold standalone or inside Kaseya 365 User; Datto RMM and Autotask are separate products in the wider Kaseya portfolio.
Key Features:
Backups go to Kaseya’s private cloud, with data centers in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Australia and Singapore. Stored backup data cannot be modified.
Backup storage is included in the per-seat price with no capacity cap or per-GB charges, and Infinite Cloud Retention keeps backups for the life of the subscription.
Restores cover a point in time, single items or whole accounts, and files can be restored to another user.
Seat-level monitoring shows every successful and failed backup run with error details for troubleshooting, and multiple admins can manage accounts under separate roles.
Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud treats Microsoft 365 as one service inside a broader service-provider platform that also protects servers, workstations, virtual machines and mobile devices, and adds disaster recovery and security. The management portal is hierarchical: a provider manages customers and units beneath it, with sub-partner management available under eligible partnership arrangements. That structure suits MSPs that resell through sub-partners or run large clients as several units.
Key Features:
Storage options include Acronis-hosted cloud storage, charged per seat with unlimited capacity, and Microsoft 365 Backup Storage, charged per GB.
Eligible per-seat deployments can also use partner-hosted cloud storage.
Static and dynamic groups built from Entra ID data apply protection across many seats at once.
Restores can cross Microsoft 365 tenants managed under the same Acronis customer account.
NinjaOne SaaS Backup runs on Dropsuite, which NinjaOne acquired in 2025, and sits alongside NinjaOne’s endpoint management, patching and remote access. It covers Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, with Entra ID protection available at an additional charge. Day-to-day management runs in the NinjaOne console, with linked portals for some tasks. Entra ID backup uses a dedicated SaaS Backup Entra Portal.
Key Features:
Backups are hosted on AWS, with a region chosen per customer from the available locations, including the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
A global dashboard shows backup status, errors, seat usage and storage across client organizations, with detailed views for each customer.
Bring Your Own Dropsuite connects existing Dropsuite accounts to NinjaOne with their licenses and contracts intact. It is not a storage option.
An archiving tier adds email journaling, eDiscovery and legal hold.
N-able Cove Data Protection backs up Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams in the same console MSPs use for Cove server and workstation backups. Each Microsoft 365 tenant sits under a customer in that console, and new users, sites and teams can be added to backup automatically. For MSPs already on Cove, Microsoft 365 becomes one more data source in a familiar dashboard.
Key Features:
Storage is bundled. Backups go to N-able’s private cloud of 30 data centers on four continents, and software-only partners also use N-able storage for Microsoft 365.
The included allowance is 1 TB of source data per licensed user, pooled across the tenant, so larger mailboxes and OneDrives can use spare capacity from smaller accounts.
Retention is set per policy and can run up to 10 years, which covers clients with multi-year regulatory holding periods.
Each client domain has a user-level view showing every protected user, what's backed up for each, and how many count toward the bill.
AvePoint Cloud Backup extends protection beyond Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams to workloads including Planner and Viva Engage. Power Platform protection is available as an add-on. For MSPs, AvePoint pairs Cloud Backup with the Elements portal for managing customers across tenants.
Key Features:
Backups go to AvePoint-hosted storage or, through BYOS, to each client's own Azure, Amazon S3 or S3-compatible storage.
With BYOK, each client can encrypt its backups with its own key in Azure Key Vault, so no one else, including the MSP, can read the data without it.
Licenses are bought, provisioned and managed inside Elements, with distributor marketplace integration and bulk deployment across customers.
Command Centers in Elements show every customer's subscriptions, service status and performance in one view, with audit-ready reports for QBRs and renewals.
Veeam sells two products for Microsoft 365. Veeam Data Cloud is a SaaS service with Azure storage in a region the customer picks. Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 is software the MSP deploys itself, typically as part of a Veeam Cloud & Service Provider offering. Which one an MSP runs determines who manages the infrastructure and controls the storage.
Key Features:
The self-managed product writes to object storage the MSP chooses, including Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, IBM Cloud and S3-compatible systems. It supports immutability on compatible storage and provides a REST API for automation.
The self-managed product can restore mailboxes and SharePoint data to another Microsoft 365 tenant, supporting tenant moves after mergers or acquisitions.
On the Foundation and Premium plans, Veeam Data Cloud backups stay available for 30 days after cancellation and can be moved to the customer's own Azure subscription.
Veeam Data Cloud consolidates backup activity across customer organizations, while Service Provider Console links self-managed Microsoft 365 organizations to client companies.
Every platform here can protect forty client tenants from one screen. The real choice is how much of the service an MSP wants to own.
Datto, NinjaOne, and N-able Cove build storage into the seat price. There's nothing to provision, but the vendor decides where the data sits and what capacity costs.
Acronis suits MSPs that sell backup as part of a wider protection service, while AvePoint is the pick for clients that rely on broad Microsoft workload coverage. Veeam gives control over the whole stack, along with the work of running it.
For MSPs that want backups in storage they own, MSP360 Managed Backup for Microsoft 365 is the strongest fit. Each client can get its own bucket on Amazon S3, Wasabi, Backblaze B2 or other S3-compatible storage, in whichever region its data has to stay. The MSP pays the storage provider directly and sets its own markup, while licensing stays at a public per-user rate with no long-term contract.
