The Indian stock market opened lower ahead of the Jio platforms stock market debut. Nifty 50 opened 71.75 points lower at 22,678 from the previous day's close, while Bank Nifty started at 53,793.25, down 181.65 points. Sensex edged down by 345.23 points to 73,253.44.
The Indian rupee opened higher at Rs. 95.03 per dollar on Wednesday against the previous close of Rs. 95.12.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought Indian equities worth a net Rs. 4,240.39 crore on Tuesday, while Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold a net Rs. 1,250.03 crore.
The broader markets outperformed the main indices with Nifty midcap index adding 0.8% and smallcap index rising 2.7%.
The Sensex continues to trade within a defined range, with 73,000-73,200 acting as the immediate support zone and 73,750-74,000 serving as the key resistance area.
The broader trading range stands at 73,000-74,000, suggesting a sideways market structure. A decisive breakout above resistance or a breakdown below support will be necessary to establish a clearer near-term direction, said Sachin Gupta, VP, Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking Private Limited.
The RSI stands at 49.14, while its moving average is at 44.84, reflecting improving momentum, although the RSI remains just below the neutral 50 mark
On the daily chart, the Nifty 50 has been moving higher, forming a sequence of higher highs and higher lows after finding support in the 22,300 zone, which acts as weekly support.
After the recent pressure, the 22,500 level will be an important support to watch, while 22,800 is likely to act as the immediate resistance zone. The market remains under pressure, and a sell-on-rise approach looks preferable until Nifty shows a sustained recovery above resistance.
A decisive break below 22,500 could trigger further weakness, while a recovery towards 22,800 may attract selling pressure. The focus will remain on whether Nifty can hold the 22,500 zone.

The Bank Nifty formed a bearish candle and continued to trade within a downward-sloping channel. The index remains well below the 20-day SMA at 54,893 and the 40-day EMA at 55,599, indicating that bears remain in control.
Currently, the Bank Nifty is trading near its trendline support around 53,900. Further selling pressure could cause a deeper decline towards 53,500.
A breakdown below 53,770 could lead to a further fall, while a sustained move above 54,400 would be required to trigger a stronger pullback.
