Diageo Sales Declined

Diageo recorded sluggish sales growth in the first quarter of its financial year as the drinks giant faced ‘competitive pressure’ in its top markets.

The company recorded net sales up 1.2% year-on-year at USD 4.9 billion. However, organic growth, which strips out currency volatility and the sale of East African Breweries to Asahi, came in at 0.6% higher. Sale volumes were also a touch lower, falling 0.1% for the July to September period.

This was led by a drop in North America, which makes up 36% of the group’s business. US sales dropped 3.7%, and volume fell by the same amount.

Next Sales Jumps

Next has seen its international sales surge ahead of expectations. The retail giant maintained its GBP 1.3 billion profit target. The firm posted a 33.2% gain in international sales in the 13 weeks to the end of October, far outperforming its forecast of 20.5% growth.

The resulting GBP 5 million in extra profit was wiped out by new EU tariffs. Next’s UK sales growth slowed from 3.6 to 2% in line with expectations. “However, growth has been volatile, with unseasonably warm weather adversely affecting sales in September.
