May 07, 2026: India Today Group is leveraging AI-powered automation to redefine newsroom efficiency and transform content creation workflows in the fast-evolving digital journalism landscape.

As the demand for real-time, high-quality news continues to grow, AI-driven automation is reshaping how modern newsrooms operate enabling faster, smarter and more scalable content production. To address challenges associated with manual processes, fragmented communication between field reporters and editorial teams and slower publishing cycles, India Today Group has implemented an AI-led approach to streamline its newsroom ecosystem.

At the core of this transformation is Pragya, a proprietary AI-driven newsroom operations and workflow automation platform developed in collaboration with Google. Seamlessly integrated with the Group’s Content Management System (CMS) Pragya also functions as an independent product, enabling editorial and user growth teams with advanced AI-powered capabilities.

The platform introduces AI-assisted content creation features such as automated keyword generation, highlights, kickers, and draft story creation allowing journalists to focus more on storytelling, analysis and verification. Complementing this is a robust human-led editorial review process, ensuring that all AI-generated outputs meet the highest standards of accuracy, credibility and journalistic integrity.

Pragya also enhances newsgathering through a dedicated Journalist App that enables field reporters to file text, audio, video and documents in real time. The app integrates directly with internal broadcast and publishing systems, ensuring seamless coordination from on ground reporting to final publication.

The impact of AI integration has been significant. The newsroom now benefits from real-time visibility into story status, faster turnaround times and structured content archiving. As a result, India Today Group has recorded a 30% reduction in content creation and publishing turnaround time, a 10% increase in content production and a 2X rise in user engagement.

Commenting on the development, Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson and Executive Editor-in-Chief of India Today Group said, “In our mission to protect the rarest mineral, ‘public attention’, our partnership with Google to build Pragya has added a high-octane layer of agility to our bedrock of trust. We are perfecting the ‘AI Sandwich’: blending machine efficiency with human storytelling. It’s a newsroom upgrade where technology empowers every voice to keep news verified, vital and accessible.”

This transformation underscores the growing role of AI in augmenting - not replacing - journalism. By combining machine efficiency with human editorial judgment, India Today Group is setting a benchmark for scalable, agile and future-ready newsroom operations.
