NASA is increasingly using artificial intelligence to make sense of decades of observations, simulations and mission data. The agency has accumulated enormous amounts of information from missions, Earth observations and scientific research, but connecting and analysing that data has traditionally been difficult and time-consuming. AI is now helping scientists and employees extract insights from information that might otherwise remain unexplored.

AI Helps With Artemis II

AI also played a role in planning NASA’s Artemis II mission. During preparations, AI tools helped generate safety recommendations and risk-mitigation scenarios for decision-makers. According to NASA’s Johnson Space Center CIO Troy LeBlanc, experts traditionally needed weeks to collect information from different sources and analyse risks and spacecraft readiness. AI tools performed that work in seconds.

AI Could Enter Mission Control

NASA’s Johnson Space Center is exploring how AI could assist flight controllers by processing the huge volume of information involved in spaceflight. A prototype AI agent developed for SPARTAN flight controllers is designed to support teams responsible for International Space Station power and thermal-control systems, potentially functioning as a virtual member of Mission Control’s backroom support teams.

Earth Science Gets AI Assistance

NASA and Microsoft developed Earth Copilot and Hydrology Copilot to help users interact with complex Earth science datasets through natural language. Hydrology Copilot can analyse information such as precipitation and soil moisture, helping users better understand water-related conditions. The technology could support drought preparation, flood-risk assessment and wider access to scientific information without requiring specialised technical expertise.

Faster Weather And Disaster Analysis

AI is also being used to improve weather forecasting and disaster response. NASA foundational models trained on decades of Earth science data and physical models can help detect and simulate weather patterns faster. AI can also process satellite information closer to where it is generated, potentially allowing flood maps and other information to reach users within minutes instead of waiting for conventional processing.

NASA Employees Explore New Uses

NASA’s growing interest in AI was highlighted by its first agencywide data and AI hackathon. Organisers initially expected around 30 participants, but more than 500 employees signed up. Winning projects included AI agents that searched NASA’s lessons-learned database and machine-learning systems designed to help diagnose forest-fire severity, demonstrating the range of potential applications.

Unlocking Unexplored Data

NASA sees AI as a tool for extracting more science from information it already possesses. The agency holds new and historical data across satellites, images, videos, audio recordings and other sources. Connecting these repositories could help scientists uncover previously overlooked patterns and knowledge. As NASA prepares for increasingly complex missions, including a future Moon Base, AI could play a growing role.
