Projector or TV?: A giant projector screen can make a home feel like a cinema, while a television offers an easy all-in-one setup. But the purchase price tells only part of the story. Power use, accessories, replacement parts and lifespan can significantly change the long-term cost of either option.

Upfront Price Can Be Similar: Projectors and TVs can occupy surprisingly similar price ranges depending on size and specifications. Basic models can cost a few hundred dollars, while premium home-theatre equipment can run into thousands. The real difference appears when accessories, installation and replacement costs enter the calculation.

Projectors May Need Extra Gear: A projector often needs more than the projector itself. Buyers may need a dedicated screen, blackout curtains, speakers or mounting equipment to create a proper home cinema. Those extras can push the total investment significantly above the initial projector price.

Electricity Costs Vary: Power consumption depends heavily on the device. BGR notes that a 100W TV used four hours daily would cost about $21.90 annually at $0.15 per kWh, while a 70W projector would cost about $15.30. Higher-powered projectors can consume substantially more electricity.

Lamp Replacement Can Add Up: Traditional projector lamps are an important long-term expense. They may require replacement after roughly one to two years, with replacement costs often ranging from $100 to $400. LED and laser projectors can last much longer, although other components may eventually require attention.

TVs Are Simpler to Maintain: Modern TVs generally require fewer separate components during normal use. BGR says many televisions can last around five to 10 years depending on the model, functionality and usage. Projectors can have comparable lifespans, but accessories and replaceable components complicate the ownership equation.

The Bigger Picture Matters: There is no universal winner on long-term cost because the answer depends on the setup. A basic projector may use less electricity while delivering a much larger picture, but accessories and maintenance can narrow that advantage. Buyers need to consider total ownership costs rather than sticker price alone.
