HDFC Bank Dominates Credit Card Spending in India

HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank: Rs. 61,435 Cr tops monthly spend, roughly 36% of the total among these seven issuers. Its lead over SBI is about 1.7 times, showing clear market leadership that no rival currently comes close to matching in India’s credit card segment today.

SBI

SBI: Rs. 35,367 Cr secures second place with about 21% of the combined total. It trails HDFC by roughly Rs. 26,000 Cr but sits comfortably ahead of ICICI, Axis, Kotak, American Express and Yes Bank on total monthly card spending across the country.

ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank: Rs. 32,358 Cr puts it third, close behind SBI with a gap of only about Rs. 3,000 Cr. It holds roughly 19% of the total, making the SBI-ICICI race for second place the one to watch among the top issuers going forward.

Axis Bank

Axis Bank: Rs. 23,073 Cr secures fourth position with about 14% of the total. Together, the top four issuers account for roughly 90% of spending among these seven banks, showing how concentrated the market is. It also exceeds Kotak's monthly volume.

Kotak Bank

Kotak Bank: Rs. 6,809 Cr marks a steep drop from Axis, holding only about 4% of the combined total. It still leads the smaller issuers, edging past American Express by roughly Rs. 600 Cr in monthly spending, a narrow margin within this bottom tier.

American Express

American Express: Rs. 6,204 Cr places it sixth, just behind Kotak Bank. It holds about 4% of the total, a notable showing for a specialist card issuer competing against large full-service banks with far bigger customer bases and extensive branch networks across the country.

Yes Bank

Yes Bank: Rs. 4,159 Cr ranks last among the seven, with about 2.5% of the total. HDFC’s monthly spend is nearly fifteen times larger, highlighting the wide gap between India’s biggest card issuers and smaller players trying to climb the credit card rankings.
