Overview:

  • Prakash began programming young, later leaving college to pursue software development and entrepreneurial opportunities in India’s emerging internet ecosystem.

  • His career includes Vipul’s Razor, Cloudmark, Topsy and Apple, highlighting his longstanding focus on solving large-scale technology challenges.

  • As Together AI’s CEO, Prakash is advancing open-source AI infrastructure and expanding access to powerful artificial intelligence technologies globally.

Vipul Ved Prakash’s career is a striking example of how curiosity, open-source thinking and relentless experimentation can turn a young programmer into a serial technology entrepreneur.

Born in 1977 in New Delhi, Prakash is today the co-founder and CEO of Together AI, an AI infrastructure company focused on making high-performance computing and open-source AI models more accessible.

Early Life and Childhood

Prakash’s fascination with computers reportedly began when he was around 12 years old, while studying at Apeejay School in Noida. A simple BASIC program that asked a user’s name and returned a personalized greeting left a lasting impression.

That early encounter with programming became the starting point of a career centered on software, internet infrastructure and eventually artificial intelligence.

His childhood was not devoted exclusively to computers. Prakash was also a competitive table-tennis player. Profiles of his career say he played for the Food Corporation of India and Delhi during the early 1990s, while competing at a high level in junior tournaments.

One profile credits him with more than 25 state and national championship gold medals and says he attended an Olympic training camp.

Education and the Decision to Drop Out

Prakash enrolled at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he studied mathematics, physics and computer science. However, conventional education did not hold his attention for long.

He eventually left college to spend more time writing software and pursuing his own technological interests. Contemporary reporting, citing MIT’s profile of Prakash, described his reason as wanting ‘undisturbed coding time.’

The decision was unconventional, especially at a time when dropping out of a prestigious Indian college was viewed very differently from today. However, it allowed Prakash to pursue practical software development while the Indian internet ecosystem was still in its infancy.

Early Career and the Internet Years

In the late 1990s, Prakash co-founded Sense/Net with Ashish Gulhati, an early internet and privacy service aimed at users in India. He also worked on web development and wrote about networking and technology, including a column called Net Zeppelin for the Indian edition of PC World.

His reputation grew through open-source programming. One of his most important creations was Vipul’s Razor, a collaborative anti-spam system designed to combat the rapidly expanding problem of unsolicited email.

The software became widely used, reportedly reaching millions of servers and becoming an important piece of open-source email security infrastructure.

The achievement brought major recognition. In 2003, at about 25 years old, Prakash was named among MIT Technology Review’s Top 100 Young Innovators, recognized for developing free and commercial software to fight spam.

Cloudmark, Napster and Topsy

Prakash subsequently worked as an engineer at Napster, gaining experience with large-scale internet systems. He later co-founded Cloudmark with Jordan Ritter, commercialising technology related to his anti-spam work and building a company focused on messaging security.

In 2007, he co-founded Topsy, a social-media search and analytics company. Topsy developed technology capable of indexing and analysing enormous volumes of social-media data, particularly Twitter activity. Its ability to process real-time social conversations eventually attracted Apple’s attention.

In December 2013, Apple acquired Topsy for a reported more than USD 200 million. Prakash subsequently joined Apple and worked on search technology, including efforts connected with Spotlight and other Apple products. He also appeared at Apple’s WWDC 2015, where iOS search APIs were introduced to developers.

Together AI and the Open-Source AI Mission

After Apple, Prakash returned to entrepreneurship. In June 2022, he co-founded Together AI with researchers and engineers including Ce Zhang, Percy Liang and Chris Ré. He serves as the company’s CEO.

Together AI focuses on the infrastructure behind modern generative AI—providing computing, model development and deployment capabilities while strongly advocating for open-source AI. Its broader proposition reflects an idea that was visible throughout Prakash’s career: powerful technology should not be controlled exclusively by a small number of companies.

By 2025, Forbes India reported that Together AI was serving more than 50,000 companies, illustrating the scale the venture had achieved.

A Career Built Around Open Technology

Prakash’s professional journey stretches from teenage programming and competitive sport to open-source software, cybersecurity, social-media search, Apple and frontier AI. His defining characteristic remains consistent, as he repeatedly enters emerging technological fields before they become mainstream.

From fighting email spam with Vipul’s Razor to helping build Topsy’s massive social-search infrastructure and now developing AI infrastructure through Together AI, Prakash spent much of his career working on the systems beneath the internet’s most transformative technologies.

His story is therefore less about a conventional academic résumé and more about learning by building, a philosophy that took a Delhi teenager fascinated by BASIC programming to the forefront of the global open-source AI movement.
