Microsoft is testing two new Xbox Cloud Gaming features that could make gaming on smart TVs more convenient. The latest updates allow players to use their Android or iPhone as a controller without downloading an additional app. Microsoft is also testing a direct Wi-Fi connection for its new Xbox Nano Controller to improve gaming responsiveness.

The first feature turns a smartphone into a virtual Xbox controller. Players can scan a QR code displayed on their smart TV to open the controls directly in their phone's web browser. Some games will also receive customized control layouts based on their gameplay requirements.

Microsoft is rolling out this preview across all regions where Xbox Cloud Gaming is available. However, players will need a supported smart TV to access the feature.

New Features

To activate the phone controller feature, users need to open the Xbox app on their smart TV. They can then visit Settings, select Account and enable the Preview Features option. When launching a game without a physical controller, an option to connect through a phone will appear.

The second update focuses on Microsoft's USD 49.99 Xbox Nano Controller. Players in the US can now test its cloud connect feature, which links the controller directly to gaming servers through Wi-Fi instead of using a Bluetooth connection to the TV. Microsoft says this approach could reduce input delays and improve gameplay.

Users can configure the connection through the Xbox beta app on Android and iOS. The Xbox Accessories app on PC also supports setup, although PC users must join the Xbox Insider program.

The feature currently works with selected smart TV and web-based cloud gaming experiences. Both updates are still in preview, and Microsoft has not announced a general release date. The company is continuing to test the features before deciding on wider availability.
