Xbox is changing how cloud gaming works for Game Pass subscribers. Starting in November 2026, Xbox Cloud Gaming will move from unlimited streaming to monthly hours based on the Game Pass plan. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming each month, while Premium subscribers get 10 hours and Essential subscribers are limited to 5 hours.

The change ends the unlimited cloud gaming access currently available to eligible Game Pass subscribers. Microsoft said the new model will allow it to continue offering the service while investing in reliability and performance.

Xbox expects the change to affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The company acknowledged that introducing limits represents a meaningful change, particularly for users who regularly spend more time gaming through the cloud.

The monthly allowance will be tied to the subscriber’s Game Pass tier:

  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours per month

  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours per month

  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours per month

Users who exhaust their monthly allowance will not need to wait until the next billing cycle. Microsoft will let subscribers purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. The company has not yet announced pricing for these additional hours and said purchasing options and available hours may vary by market. More details are expected before the November rollout.

The limits apply specifically to cloud gaming. Users can continue to download and play supported Game Pass titles directly on their consoles or PCs without using their cloud gaming allowance.

Microsoft is also letting players use Xbox Cloud Gaming even without a Game Pass subscription. Starting next month, gamers will be able to buy cloud gaming time on the Xbox Store to play any compatible game in their collections.

The new choice might be interesting for those gamers who use the technology only sometimes and don’t need a recurring Game Pass subscription. Gamers with Xbox One consoles can also access compatible titles designed for Xbox Series X|S consoles via cloud technology without an upgrade.

As Microsoft notes, the cost of delivering cloud gaming increases as more players use the service and spend more time playing. Monthly limits will allow the company to keep developing cloud gaming and investing in its performance.

Currently, cloud gaming is still unlimited for eligible Game Pass subscribers. The changes will take place in November 2026.
