WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, the Soulslike action RPG from Leenzee and 505 Games, has officially dropped its review embargo. Initial performance metrics indicate that it's one of the most CPU-intensive Unreal Engine 5 titles launched to date.
Benchmark testing shows that even the best GPUs are stressed by WUCHANG. At max settings for 1080p only an AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX and higher were able to achieve/maintain stable 60+ FPS frame rates. At 1440p or 4K, even the fastest NVIDIA RTX 5090 could not manage 60 FPS without upscaling.
While it was constructed on Unreal Engine 5.1.1, WUCHANG lacks support for AMD FSR 3.0 or Intel XeSS 2.0, a deficiency that restricts choice for users other than NVIDIA. DLSS 4 is present but has a critical flaw: Frame Generation becomes disabled during gameplay events. It leads to stutters and dips in performance. DLAA and MFG X4 provide the optimal visual experience. However, the Frame Gen bug renders the game almost unplayable when enabled.
The game offers a decent set of graphics settings, but adjusting them has a minimal impact on performance. Even dropping presets to Medium or Low doesn't provide noticeable gains unless combined with upscaling.
Graphics-wise, WUCHANG is stunning with Lumen-enabled lighting and rich environments, but does suffer from some minor texture and shadow issues. Shader compilation stuttering is no longer an issue, which is a positive development. However, some instances of stuttering during traversal can be detected.
Overall, WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is a visually appealing game but utterly hardware-straining for PCs. Players with lower-grade GPUs will have to settle for reduced resolution or settings for smoother gameplay until DLSS Frame Gen issues are resolved and AMD/Intel upscalers are implemented.
