Shared micromobility company Veo is introducing electric tricycles to public streets, betting that a more stable and accessible design could attract a wider range of riders than traditional e-bikes and e-scooters. The company has launched its new three-wheeled electric vehicle, called the Rover, in Denver, with plans to expand the service to more US cities in the coming months.
The Rover operates like a shared bike or scooter. Riders unlock it through the Veo app, pay for the trip, and return it after use. Designed to fit within standard bike lanes, the electric trike has a top speed of 10 mph, lower than the speed limit typically allowed for shared micromobility vehicles. Veo says the reduced speed is intended to improve rider safety. The vehicle also offers an estimated range of 45 miles per charge and includes a rear cargo basket capable of carrying groceries or luggage.
Compared to other traditional two-wheelers, the Rover’s three-wheeled design does not require rider balancing, as it keeps the vehicle upright. According to Veo, the design will be easy to operate for older adults, first-time users of ride-sharing services, and those with physical challenges.
The design was developed after consulting disability rights groups, organizations for the elderly, and mobility experts.
The launch comes after Denver signed a deal with Veo, giving the firm an exclusive contract to operate the city’s bike-sharing system and replace current operators Lime and Bird. Veo intends to use the city as its testbed to study rider behaviors and needs before introducing the Rover to other locations.
The vehicle is equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant to provide navigation and riding updates, as well as lidar technology that can detect when riding on sidewalks. Trip data gathered from riders is anonymous.
While electric tricycles have been available in the consumer market for years, Veo’s launch marks one of the first large-scale efforts to introduce them into shared micromobility services. The company believes the format could appeal not only to older or mobility-impaired users but also to commuters looking for a more stable alternative to scooters and bicycles.
