Sony is celebrating the 30th anniversary of PlayStation and has released a new update for the PS5 for fans to enjoy. The update features dynamic themes based on generations of PlayStation consoles, from PlayStation 1 to PlayStation 4, which bring out nostalgia for gamers.
The new update of the PS5 software allows users to customize the dashboard's appearance using themes similar to those of the previous PlayStation console. When initially set up, the console asks which theme the user prefers, and then the PS5 can adapt its UI to resemble the selected console's colours, sounds, and visuals.
Every theme corresponds to the specific generation’s identity. The PS1 theme uses the layout of the classic console, and the PS2 theme uses its menu shapes. Likewise, the PS3 theme has a familiar wave background, and the PS4 theme has wave patterns that define the console's user interface. These themes seek to remind users of the long history of PlayStation in the early days while highlighting the evolution of its interfaces.
The themes are in a special ‘PlayStation 30th Anniversary’ tab in the console's settings section. However, Sony has confirmed that this service will be temporarily available, and people are encouraged to try it out while it lasts.
Besides the nostalgic themes, they are a highlight, but Sony has stated that they will only be available for a limited period. This time-sensitive feature could have been built to foster enthusiasm and acquisition by PlayStation players. Nevertheless, the company has yet to unveil a definite time to cease the promotion.
It is part of the celebration to mark the anniversary of the program’s implementation. Apart from the software feature, Sony has launched many PlayStation-themed hardware, such as accessories that mimic the look of the original PlayStation 1. These products are meant to give fans and collectors something to collectively celebrate three decades of PlayStation’s impact on the gaming industry.
There has also been speculation of more announcements since Bloodborne servers are scheduled for maintenance on December 3rd, the anniversary date. Many fans expect Sony to unveil something related to this event since the company has not officially stated anything about it.
Dynamic themes on the PS5 reflect Sony’s aims of appreciating history while actively interacting with its followers. As such, the update permits users to enjoy the look and feel typical of past console generations, demonstrating the significance of PlayStation in the gaming market.
